Spring Cleaning for OTC: And What That ACTUALLY Means

March 16, 2021

Spring is finally, well, springing. And top of mind for me is cleaning out the clutter – especially in the bathroom. My makeup, skincare and even OTC medications have been unruly to say the least. As part of this, I am also taking a look at all of the products I have and evaluating if a cleaner or greener option is available. While I have always been fairly conscious with beauty, I never knew that there was a better option for my medicine. After doing a little digging I came across Genexa, a company known for their clean medicine. Basically, they use the active ingredients we all need like acetaminophen, but without all of the fillers and junk we don’t. Intrigued, I actually spoke to the founders of the brand, David Johnson and Max Spielberg, to hear more about what exactly clean medicine meant, why they started the brand, and how we can tell the difference among all of the “cleanwashing” out there.

Tell us why you started Genexa?

We started Genexa because as two dads, we were disgusted by what we found in so many of the ingredients found in kids OTC medicines. We could not understand why so many other industries had already started getting cleaned up – beauty, skincare, food, beverage, automotive – but pharma was behind. It’s the most counterintuitive thought in the world for the medicines that are supposed to help you feel better would have the most sickening ingredients. So we decided to do something about it and after many doors getting shut in our face, found partners with deep expertise in formulation, manufacturing, and medicine to create what we call real medicine made clean.

You say that it’s the first clean medicine company – but what does that really mean?

Our products have the same exact active ingredient as leading brands – like diphenhydramine – which is the reason you take the medicine in the first place. But we take all the unhealthy inactive ingredients – like talc, wood pulp, fake sugars, allergens, etc. – out and replace them with organic, non-GMO better for you ingredients. That means diphenhydramine with the same efficacy as Children’s Bendaryl, but instead of sodium benzoate (which can convert to a potential carcinogen), we use organic citrus acid (which is naturally found in citrus fruits).

Why do consumers even need to care about what is in their OTC medicines?

Consumers have only been given 1 option for far too long — synthetic, potentially harmful ingredients in their medicines. Today, more than ever, consumers can impact what products are being made and demand change with their wallets. I don’t think the big pharma companies making these OTCs are putting people first when they’re putting in ingredients like talc (which have been linked to cancer) or artificial dyes (which have been linked to ADD and ADHD) in their medicines. These are terrible ingredients that these companies put in their formulas because they’re cheap. Like sucralose, which is 4% the cost of sugar. These ingredients have been in OTC medicines for decades and they don’t care to really make a change. Consumers deserve better and it starts by them knowing what’s in their medicines.

Max, you personally also suffered from side effects due to ingredients in OTC medicines, can you talk a little about your experience?

When I was a kid, I had severe seasonal allergies; but, when I tried to take over-the-counter medicine for relief, I had multiple allergic reactions. I still have terrible seasonal allergies, but I can’t take drugs with synthetic ingredients because my temperature spikes and I break out in a horrible rash all over my body. My reaction is not abnormal. 35MM Americans have allergic reactions to ingredients found in food, drinks and medicines they ingest. I’ve talked to customers that went to the ER because of anaphylaxis reactions to ingredients in Benadryl. Our CMO’s grew up with a brother who would get a 104+ degree fever, which initiated seizures, anytime he had Red Dye #40 — which is found in many of the red liquid medicines on shelf. Too many people, just like me, are allergic to these ingredients and just don’t know they are the root cause.

What’s next?

Last year we extended our line of Kids’ medicines. We have a robust pipeline of both adult and kids’ medicines that will launch later this year and next. We are on a mission to revolutionize the entire medicine aisle — creating clean alternatives to every medicine on shelf today. And beyond just creating clean products, our ambition is to create change at the systemic level. There’s no reason that the US should allow ingredients in products we ingest that are banned in other parts of the world. We want to raise awareness about what’s really in the products we’re putting in our bodies, and be the impetus for change systemically.

Embody Retinol And ACV Gummies

March 5, 2021

The gummy biz is really just taking off. And now, EMBODY is the world’s first retinol gummy with a mission to radically evolve how women treat their skin. They are replacing hundreds of skincare products with one simple tasty gummy. Even better, Embody is a women-owned, minority-owned, women-led brand.

Just two a day (it’s hard to eat only two – they are THAT yummy), and your skin will appear more evenly pigmented, texture is eliminated, and collagen production is increased resulting in more youthful looking skin to produce a luminous glow.

Also right here on Amazon!

A formula designed to provide a dewy glow, reduce blemishes, promote cell turnover, strengthen hair, skin, nails and prevent premature aging (inclusive of ingredients like Vitamin A, C, D3, E, Biotin, Folic Acid, B12 and more).

A juicy apple-flavored, inside-out wellness solution is designed to support healthy gut flora, improve digestion and replenish antioxidants. Supporting your gut health helps relieve inflammation in your skin and throughout your body; poor gut health can actually be the cause of acne and aging in the skin (it breaks down collagen!!).  Embody‘s ACV gummy provides the full recommended dose of ACV in just 2 gummies!

While Embody’s Retinol Gummy helps to promote skin cell turnover, the ACV gummy promotes gut health – while both add to the whole body approach to skin care. Most consumers don’t think about starting in their guts (healthy diet, probiotics, gut-supporting vitamins) when some of their skin concerns can be treated with a simple change in diet.

And the ACV Gummy!

AMY POEHLER OPENS GLOBES W/MILLENNIAL MIDDLE PART / FINISHES WITH SOFT PULL & PIN

March 1, 2021

Stylist Kylee Heath used Philip B Hair Care and Olivia Garden Tools to create her soft, sexy shiny looks

GOLDEN GLOBES CO-HOST AMY POEHLER OPTS FOR SLEEK MAJOR MILLENNIAL MOMENT “MIDDLE PART” GLOSSY BLOW-OUT & SOFT WAVES FOR HER OPENING LOOK and CLOSES THE SHOW WITH A SWEET AND SEXY “SIDE PULL AND PIN” WITH LONG BANGS

Two days of tech check, rehearsals, and 35000 miles away, hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were a perfectly choreographed pair for their double duty hosting duties.

Her hair stylist Kylee Heath accented her two stage looks with polished, smooth shiny chic hair – starting with the first parted right down the middle – millennial style.

She wanted to create a look that was “really soft, smooth and a slight nod to the adorable but retro vibe of the Moschino dress”to open the show opting for it down and picking the winning side of the battle of Gen-Zers vs. millennials.

To prep she gave Amy the Philip B Peppermint and Avocado Scalp scrub to stimulate, polish, exfoliate and eliminate any build up for a smooth, clean hydrated clean start.

LOOK #1 – BREAKDOWN MIDDLE PART

  • I then created a center part and started from the bottom and working my way up from the back of the head. I added a wave using the Olivia Garden Ceramic+Ionbrush and curled 1 1/4 in sections away from the face.
  • Then I went in with my Olivia Garden Carbosilk CS-T1 comb. which has the perfect carbon material for lifting and teasing. I teased the roots around the crown and then tucked the front behind her ears. I brushed out the waves (key to brush under! So bristles up) and then gave a final light tease.

  • I finished the look with a spray Philip’s Russian Amber Dry Shampoo for a little texture and lift because it was a long day. I wanted a gleaming finish but soft and not to “heavy”.
LOOK #2 – SIDE PULL AND PIN WITH LONG BANGS
  • Then I combed out and pulled back the other side, pinned it back [leaving the long bangs out dusting her chin], brushed, teased and textured the ends with one more spray of Philip B Jet Set Hairspray and she was ready to hit the stage finish the night and close the show.

Why is it important that we celebrate Black History Month?  We have to honor the contributions of African Americans in society that have been overlooked!

Who are some African American leaders that have inspired you?  Innovation in science holds a special place in my heart. Harold Amos was a microbiologist and the first African American department chair at Harvard Medical school.

Forever 21 Celebrates Black History Month

February 5, 2021

This is Forever21’s first-ever collection celebrating BHM!

Designer and photographer, Ashley Sky Walker (of Leimert Park Threads) and illustrator and designer, Stormy Nesbit whose work was featured in an op-ed written by our VP, Kamala Harris – who are both launching limited edition capsule collections this Thursday, February 4th with Forever 21 in celebration of Black History Month.

“This partnership and Forever21 created a space for black creatives like myself to really have a hands on approach from start-to-finish. F21 allowed me to be fully immersed, and to create from my heart, and present my most authentic self without any reservations – so my excitement is an understatement, I’m ecstatic to have my work in a Black History Month capsule. This has shown me that there really is no limit to my art,” says Stormy.

Forever21’s first-ever partnership collection celebrating Black History Month, is a collaboration with three up-and-coming artists and creators, Ashley Sky Walker, Stormy Nesbit and Henry Jones.

Each collection showcases the range of beauty and power of artistic expression. A portion of proceeds from the collections will be shared with the artists, as well as donations made to charity partners including Sole Folks, Tec Leimert and Project Level.

Celebrating artistry and community, the capsule collections will launch online at www.forever21.com and select retail locations!

Stormy Nesbit’s Collection

Stormy draws inspiration from the people she’s surrounded with, her environment and God. She’s able to source feelings and emotions that she picks up on when she is surrounded by the people she loves and translates that in each of her pieces. Every single piece was secretly inspired by someone she personally knows and loves – Stormy says, “they might recognize it, they might not.”

Her art collections represent people of color, specifically women in the highest form. Representation matters and Stormy wants to be able to reach her community in the largest scale possible and remind them that they are seen. Stormy has learned her best work comes from her heart, and not what people expect; her best work is created at night while she plays Maverick City music and designs that she feels.

Ashley Sky Walker’s Collection

Much of Ashley’s inspiration for his F21 capsule came from within; he looked into archives of his photography and paintings over the years and was able to spot consistencies reflecting Black life. By showcasing moments of joy, rebellion and magic through his work, he realized that was the collection he needed to design – celebrating Black History through the lens of his camera and paintbrush.

“When F21 reached out and asked me to be a part of their Black History Month campaign, it felt amazing and honestly validating. I had a quick stint with the company back in 2016 to shoot their e-comm and was let go after a few months, which ultimately led me to launch Leimert Park Threads. The studio where we photographed the campaign shoot was the same studio where I was told would be my last day…I could not have planned this journey any more than the universe did. It was an unreal full circle moment!” says Ashley.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Stormy Nesbit is a Phoenix-based illustrator and designer with roots in the Midwest whose works primarily expresses the beauty and strength of America’s Black communities, with a focus on the women within them. Her brown-skinned characters echo the pride she has for her community, and the modern aesthetic provides a new take on the elegance in melanin. Stormy’s work has been featured in campaigns by national brands and in several publications, including an illustration created to run with an article written by Vice President Kamala Harris (linked in the intro paragraph).

Ashley Sky Walker started his career as a photographer the second he got his first camera, beginning to see work in a different light and experience. Being raised in South Central Los Angeles, Walker learned the importance of respect and patience when dealing with the ebb and flow of life. After studying at Howard University, Walker lived in New York City for over a decade which allowed him to work with brands like DVF, NIKE and VIBE Magazine and show off his raw but elegant photography style.

Walker eventually returned to Los Angeles with a new venture in mind and Leimert Park Threads was born in 2017 – a unisex clothing brand motivated by the struggle to bring awareness to black, brown, and colored life. Designed by Walker himself, he aims to create original streetwear pieces that are empowering and a tribute to cultural movements of the past. The brand first launched with the COLORED Collection, a line meant for every race, gender and creed standing for unity and equal rights for all and has been worn by celebrities like Issa Rae, Beyonce, and Chadwick Boseman.
