Mark Moon: the Blood Type Diet and maximizing your workout

December 20, 2013

NO MORE CHICKEN FOR YOU, YOU'RE A B+ BLOOD TYPE!

TOO MUCH CARDIO WILL MAKE YOU FAT!

…just two of the mind blowing tips Mark unloaded upon me last week when we chatted workouts, women in their 40's, The Blood Type Diet (for ultimate functioning of immune system and digestion) and more.

I trained with him a couple of weeks ago and in less than an hour my workout far surpassed my daily 60-mins-plus cardio-elliptical-pallooza.  Seven days a week of cardio and I have gained ten pounds this past year. HELP.

Mark had me rocking quick bursts with heavy weights, a simple, manageable routine that mixed kettle bells/dead lifts/cardio/squats/cardio (etc) setting my metabolism on fire, pushing me to fatigue in every short set and sending me on my way, into an all day burning zone situtaion!

In short, ladies, we need to be lifting weights (substantial, not just the super light high rep thing that's so popular), doing shorter bursts of intense reps to fatigue and mixing the weight training with cardio – in a rapid circuit training way.  Firing up your muscles and metabolism this way creates a furnace, so to speak, so you are burning calories post workout.  Those mega-endurance cardio sessions are a waste of time without the resistance weight training.  We need bone-density-building weighted resistance to create muscle to burn burn burn – otherwise you'll end up like me: wasting over an hour a day on cardio, stuck in the same place, body unchanged and fat.

NEVA Activewear Launches Campaign to Change Women’s Lives in South Asia Fashionable Fitness Apparel Line Puts the Focus on Community, Not Profit

November 7, 2013

Fashionable Fitness Apparel Line Puts the Focus on Community, Not Profit

NEVA Activewear, a new fitness apparel brand on a mission to change the lives of women across the globe, has just announced the launch of its inaugural crowdfunding campaign to raise capital for its new BE THE CHANGE line via Kickstarter.

NEVA was developed by philanthropist and second-generation fashion/garment entrepreneur, Sacha Nana.  Nana’s desire to empower women through inspiring activewear took her across the globe to South Asia, where she realized she could change women’s lives by partnering with them to create her line. NEVA is proud to be able to offer stylish, active apparel that looks good and does good.

Each NEVA Activewear garment features high-quality fabric, savvy design, and a hand-stitched inspirational message embroidered by a female artisan in South Asia. NEVA helps transform these women’s lives with each stitch, paying them 10 times their typical wages and giving them the income they need to provide food, healthcare and education for their families.

“We currently employ small groups of artisans in communities across South Asia but NEVA is more than a job for these artisans; it’s an opportunity for a better life and a brighter future,” says Nana. “The reality is that only one-third of the region’s working-age women have paying jobs, and many are underpaid.”

In order to produce their next line and continue their efforts in South Asia, NEVA is looking to raise funds via a crowdfunding campaign they launched with Kickstarter on November 6. With their goal of $50,000 achieved, NEVA Activewear will have the funding they need to launch their BE THE CHANGE line in early 2014.

NEVA’s launch collection, appropriately named BE THE CHANGE, is featured as part of the rewards on their Kickstarter campaign. This collection includes two designs: a relaxed fit, all-purpose hoodie made from soft, French terry cotton and an athletic, slim-fit jacket made from high-performance nylon and LYCRA® retailing at $89 each. As campaign donors empower themselves through exercise, these inspirational messages will remind them of the lasting impact they are making on women’s lives around the world.

‘Look good, feel good, do good’ are the core values that define the NEVA way.  For more information on NEVA, visit www.nevawear.com.

When you buy NEVA, you’re helping build a better life for an artisan in South Asia.  These women make transformational wages to support her family by hand embroidering inspiring messages on every NEVA piece. These messages of hope will move you closer to your life’s passions and remind you of the lasting impact you’re making on another woman’s life.

IS YOUR MORNING WORKOUT COMPROMISING YOUR HEALTH? IS YOUR MORNING WORKOUT COMPROMISING YOUR HEALTH?

October 24, 2013

CHECK OUT THIS INTERESTING PIECE FROM THE NEW AWESOME WEBSITE WORLDLIFESTYLE.COM

Checking your workout off your list first thing in the morning may not be as healthy as you think.

Best time of day to work out

Conventional wisdom—and flocks of lean early birds—argue that a morning workout is best. You’re more likely to exercise consistently, burn fat preferentially, and stoke your metabolism for the whole day, so the logic goes. But, the early morning sweat sesh isn’t for everyone, including many of those who slog through it every day. You can click here for reviews into archives of different workouts, products and tips and tricks.

Exercise Motivation

Research suggests that those who work out in the morning are more likely to keep at it over the long haul. However, it stands to reason that the type of person who gets up before work to exercise is more likely to be disciplined in their lives in general. A morning workout doesn’t confer discipline; it’s the byproduct of it.

Burning Fat First?

When you exercise in a semi-fasted state—before breakfast for example—you have reduced muscle glycogen and depleted liver glycogen, which would normally fuel your workout. With limited glycogen stores, your body reaches to stored fat and, to a limited extent, amino acids in your muscles for energy. But, at the end of the day, literally, it’s the total amount of energy burned that matters.

Reduced Performance

Let’s say you wake up bright and early for a morning run and log 30 minutes at a pace of 6 miles per hour, burning 307 calories before hunger drives you home. Compare that to exercising in a fueled state—in the afternoon, for example—when you may log 30 minutes at 8 miles per hour. The latter workout burns over 100 additional calories. Even if you were to sustain an equivalent pace in the morning and afternoon workouts, both would burn the same relative amount of total energy.

Sleep Deprivation

With its regulatory effect on appetite, leptin is a master hormone, according to UCLA professor Aaron Blaisdale PhD. When you skimp on sleep, your body reduces leptin concentrations and churns out ghrelin, a hormone that increases your appetite. Even, dragging yourself out of bed a couple hours before you’re sufficiently rested can negatively impact your hormone levels. Increased cravings are hardly the payback you’d expect from your healthy habit. According to a prospective study published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, sleep durations less than seven hours contributed to increased risk of obesity.

Best Time of Day to Exercise

According to Kari Hartel, RD, LD, because your body temperature is highest and you’re most alert in the afternoon, you’re less susceptible to injury and more likely to have a good workout. However, the expert consensus is that the best time of day to work out is the time that you’re most likely to actually do it. If you do choose to exercise in the morning, make sure you’re well-rested and warm-up your muscles with active stretches and foam rolling to prevent injury.
