Culture Alert

October 7, 2018

Here
October 25, 2018 through January 6, 2019
Opening Reception, October 21, 2018, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG), and the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation (BAPF) are pleased to present the group exhibition, Here, which will be on view at LAMAG located at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard in Barnsdall Park, from October 25, 2018, through January 6, 2019, with an opening reception on October 21, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Here is a group exhibition that examines shifting physical/geographical and conceptual/imagined boundaries (and boundlessness) in, and around, the metropolis of Los Angeles. Boundaries provide us the physical and conceptual framework to delineate the idea of “self” from “other,” and “here” from “there.” However, boundaries contain an inherent paradox; as political theorist William E. Connolly succinctly suggests, “Boundaries provide pre-conditions of identity, individual agency, and collective action; but they also close off possibilities of being that might otherwise flourish. Boundaries both foster and inhibit freedom; they both protect and violate life.”

In addition to the natural and traditional human geography (such as neighborhoods), the artists assembled in Here investigate Los Angeles’s internal physical and conceptual boundaries, the bridges in-between, and permeability of these boundaries. Here explores these localized frictions – the hybridity and fluidity of Los Angeles – to uncover these bounded and unbounded landscapes within Los Angeles.

Here features works by Heimir Björgúlfsson, Sandra de la Loza, Gajin Fujita, Gloria Galvez, Anna Sew Hoy, Iris Yirei Hu, Annetta Kapon, Patrick Martinez, Jane C. Mi, Alison O’Daniel, Renée Petropoulos, Nancy Popp, Umar Rashid, Sandy Rodriguez, Fran Siegel, Henry Taylor, and Mario Ybarra Jr.

Step2 presents the 7th Annual Celebrity Red Carpet Event

September 26, 2018

September’s Child Safety Month ended with the 7th Celebrity Red CARpet Safety Awareness Event, a fun-filled, educational, inspiring and engaging event for parents and kids that benefitted Baby2Baby!
The event aimed to help spread awareness about Car Seat Safety as well as other areas of safety (Activity Safety, Car Seat Safety, On-The-Go Safety, Home Safety, Body Care Safety, and Kitchen Safety) that affect parents and their precious loved ones.
As a mom, Baby2Baby has always been tucked away deep in my heart where it holds forever space. An incredible, inspiring organization that really holds to the simple words – give back.
Celebs stepped out to celebrate and bring awareness to this worthy life-changing cause.

PIONEERING EXHIBITION LAUNCHING ON JULY 26 INTRODUCES A NEW GENERATION OF LOS ANGELES TALENT

July 26, 2018

The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery has a history of showing cutting edge work in LA, which continues with the debut of group exhibition, Juried Exhibition 2018 on July 26 at Barnsdall Art Park (4800 Hollywood Blvd.). Awarded biannually by the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), the pioneering Juried exhibitions have been running for six decades, introducing a new generation of Los Angeles artists and taking the pulse of contemporary art practice in the city.

Featuring students and recent graduates from the region’s leading MFA programs, the works in the exhibition represent a variety of mediums from performance and video to painting and installation. This year’s works explore topical themes from identity politics and intersectionality; ‘prepper’ culture and psychoanalytic theory; as well as more sustained critiques of the relationship between images and truth in a digital age.

The opening reception of Juried Exhibition 2018 on Sunday featured a special performance by Rebecca Bruno, the founder of homeLA. Other notable works include Hannah Varamini’s Colony Reprise, a dramatic site-specific seaweed installation and Gal Amiram’s Doubles, a monumental 24-foot inkjet print which critiques the manipulation of images through digital technology. Also not to be missed are Lena Daly’s sculptural installation ReCharge Battery, employing UV light and ultrasound, Anikó Kuikka’s video installation, White Sugar, which offers a compelling fairytale for the modern age, and Adee Roberson’s vibrant paintings that speak to African diasporic memory.

Artists were selected from an open call for entries by a jury comprised of Jonathan Griffin, art critic; Jamillah James, Curator, Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Steven Nelson, Professor of African and African American Art History, UCLA. The 2018 edition of Juried Exhibition continues to build on its legacy beginning in 1953 of providing a platform for emerging artists in Southern California.
