Kat Kendall checks in on and checks out at the new FREE CITY SURERSHOP on Highland.

September 12, 2010

There’s a new community center in the neighborhood. And it just so happens you
can buy clothes there. Clothes that have a message. And there’s other stuff by local artisans like Vans, Heath Ceramics, Oliver Peoples, Commune. And if you’re not in the market for shopping? Don’t let that stop you from taking part.

In the new 3000 square foot Free City Supershop Supermat everyone is welcome.
I’m going by today to get an almond milk drink and the vegan
ice cream that tastes like an indulgent desert. I want to hang out and bask in the art vibe. And I wont get the evil eye for scoping and not shopping either. Nina Garduno, the creator of this experience wants me to. She wants us all to come and just hang. Nina is a taste maker who lives life like an evolving, living and breathing art installation.

The supermat idea came from the laundry mat. The place where the community
hangs out together while getting life done. Come linger, look at the art, listen to great music, that includes a special mix from Wendy Melvoin. Or see the bicycle painting or string art that Leisha Hailey made, yes Leisha Hailey
the gorgeous actress everyone fell in love with from the L Word.

GET INSPIRED.

And if you do decide to spend some money on clothes, you wont be sorry. I
can’t afford a $325 sweatshirt. But wait actually, I can. Here’s the idea: If you by one of the right thing, you save money, because you don’t waste money buying seven of the wrong thing. Every print on a Free City sweatshirt is blocked printed by a human. Right here in the U.S.A. The ink is so deeply saturated you have colors that you just don’t see on clothes. Plus the sweatshirt was cherry picked, and cut just so, and the material? The softest yummiest smelling sweatshirt you’ll always want to wear. On a hike, or a plane, or over a dress at a chic dinner. It works everywhere. So you’ll get your money’s worth. I can attest to that, because the yellow hoodie I bought 4 years ago is still my go to jacket for everything.

If a Free City sweatshirt was a guy, he would be my perfect mate because he’d go the distance. I would never get sick of the relationship and I’d feel cozy and sexy at the same time.

All my needs would be met!!!!!

For now, there’s the California dreamin’ at Free City.

Here are the Minx toesies I promised from Plush Beauty Bar for Moms

Demi can snap away and grab a Sports Illustrated worthy bikini shot in her bathroom and it took me a half hour to grab a decent toe shot.  And even then I had to crop it cuz to me even my toes look fat.  You can imagine my trying to summon up to courage to post my Vi Peel before and afters – I know, you've been asking. I'm trying!

Ce la vie.

Here are me Minxies!

$65 and should last several weeks.  WORTH IT!

My 4.5 year old daughter is gonna flip out when she gets her eyeballs on these.

Los Angeles encapsulated in two iphone photos…

September 11, 2010

I think this says it all about L.A.

The Vanity.

The Narcissism.

The Exhibitionism.

All wrapped up perfectly in the latest  Demi Twit Pics.

She's 47 years old.

Looks 19.

Has the $$$ to make that happen (reported to have spent OVER 3 MILLION on plastic surgery admits to it AND to having suffered an extreme body obsession:

"I had an extreme obsession with my body. I made it a measure of my own value,"  "I tried to dominate it," she says of her body. "Which I did, and I changed it multiple times over. But it never lasted and ultimately it didn't bring me anything but temporary happiness."

Takes photos of herself. All day.  Usually half naked.

Posts it all on Twitter for our enjoyment.

Then again, if I (had the money to) look(ed)  like that, I'd be staring at myself in a bikini all day too.

I JUST WOULDN'T BE POSTING THEM ALL DAY ON TWITTER. (That's all)

Look, there's clearly nothing wrong with looking and feeling fab and it's not so secret that those things very often go hand in hand.  I am obvi all for doing whatever it is that makes you happy and helps you feel your best. GO FOR IT!  But please, there is something just so wrong about THIS.  Ugh.  And when I see chics with ridic bods on Facebook posting bikini photos it actually embarrasses me. Like, WTF ARE YOU THINKING kind of embarrassing where I feel stupid FOR them since they can't for themselves.  Ya know what I mean?

WAIT!

In case you're spiraling with jealousy and self-loathing (possible, very very possible) take heart.

This is not normal for 47.

According to CELEBRITY DIRTY LAUNDRY:

Although Demi Moore denies bitterly ever having had plastic surgery or a face lift the top Hollywood surgeons say that is unlikely.   They say there is no reasonable way to achieve Demi`s youthful look without a face lift. The fact is that she has had a huge amount of skin treatment including Restylane and Juviderm, Botox, and fillers for her cheeks and brows, as well as laugh lines.

Dr. Larry Koplin a leading Beverley Hills Plastic Surgeon told Pop Tarts.“As a 47-year-old, she would be defying all laws of nature by looking so good without true surgery…”   Another high-profile Beverly Hills surgeon, Dr. Ashkan Ghavami also weighed in saying that she keeps certain key areas near her ears covered or camouflaged with earrings – and these areas are where we would see the scars and markings of a face lift.   Some rumors have it that Demi has had up to $3,000,000 worth of cosmetic surgery to counter the natural aging process.

AND YOU CAN GO HERE TO SEE WHAT HER BODY MODIFICATIONS ARE/COST -OF COURSE ALL ASSUMED. GO TO 'COMMENTS'…

PLUSH BEAUTY BAR FOR MOMS. (You heard me) And right next to Whole Foods! Now that’s the kind of 2 for 1 a multi-tasking mom digs.

Ahh…. As a new mom, it doesn't get any better than the genius PLUSH BEAUTY BAR - a non-toxic nail and waxing salon for moms  - as in – bring your babies and toddlers – AND get that mani-pedi-Minx,Shellac, Brows, Brazilian and don't worry about a thing!  There are swings, a play area, toys, the works. Your kid will be in play-time heaven while you can finally take care of the grooming, we all know as a mom, is so hard to sneak in.

I'm not kidding, with a three month old this was like walking into a dream. I got a fab bikini wax, the first since pre-baby (btw, Jennifer gave me one of the most awesome Brazilian's ever… there were special waxes for different areas – yup, you know what I'm talking about – each part of the vag got it's own unique wax specific to the skin's delicate needs) and NEVER have I experienced this kind of detail. She is phenom, mom or no mom. Get a wax from her! And when AJ's paci popped out mid wax, Jennifer just popped it back in for me while I chilled.

Then I got my toes MINXED!!  Finally.  By the amazing Wenonah.  I love it!  I'll take a pic for you – they are awesome.  Silver and hot pink diagonal stripes. Very 80's punk meets disco. I'm reeling!

The prices are beyond competitive – a Minx full pedi is $60…Go try and find that somewhere.

Brazilian – $49.  Sweet.

My little boy had a blast. I had so much fun gabbing and RELAXING (finally) they almost had to kick me out. Seriously, this was what I call, a perfect Saturday.

And no one blinked when he took a huge crap and I changed a stinky diaper mid-pedi.

The place is small and cute and it's next to Whole Foods on Santa Monica Blvd and Fairfax.  So you can get groomed AND pick up dinner. How brill is that?

I'm going back for leg wax and Shellac nails as my treat for next week. 🙂

Here's the story behind it:

Plush Beauty Bar for Moms took form after co-founder Kathryn Grady had a baby and began to feel like she was falling apart. In spite of having maternity time on her hands and a cooperative baby, there was nowhere she could easily go to even get a simple manicure or eyebrow wax.

“I didn’t feel like children were welcome in most salons—plus I didn’t want to expose my baby to the harsh chemical fumes of acrylics and other nail products.”

She told her friend, Jennifer Paige, an Aveda-trained esthetician, about the quandary.

Jennifer said, "You're right. I see mothers juggling their children all the time, and there is never the space to accommodate them properly.  Let's open a business."

Thus Plush Beauty Bar for Moms was born. It features:

  • A children’s play area
  • Ample stroller parking
  • Bench seating so that babies and children can sit next to mom during treatments
  • Low-fume, low-toxic products and services –  no acrylics
  • Nail buffing option at no additional fee to eliminate polish drying time
  • Fast services to accommodate short attention spans—very few children have the patience to wait for mom to finish a two-hour mani/pedi.
  • Comfy armchairs for nursing
  • Roomy bathroom with changing table
  • Staff who accommodate breaks between or during appointments to tend to baby.
  • Juice, crackers, and diapers to assist with emergencies
  • Central location near Whole Foods, a dry cleaner, bakery, post office, Starbucks, and many other conveniences to allow for ease in errand-running
  • Parking at the shopping center and additional lots on Orange Grove (the street on the east side of the shopping center)
  • Hand-picked retail items—Plush doesn’t sell anything that its founders don’t LOVE and believe in.   Everything in the boutique has been tested and Plush-approved.
