You’ve been to Palm Springs, Ojai, La Jolla for your little weekend getaways. But what about San Diego? I honestly in my 25 years in LA cannot remember ever coming to SD and what an awesome treat it was to experience the stunning Kona Kai Resort & Spa directly on the water, overlooking the dock of stunning yachts. With it’s state of the art gym (with a full on class schedule), fantastic pool and jacuzzi, tiki bar, exceptional restaurant and quaint Spa Terre, there is no reason to ever leave the property.

Grab your hubby, wife, lover or family and hole up for what can be a romantic tryst or family weekend. The guests are not your hipster, Hollywood denizens but just “normal” people from what seems like all over. So, so refreshing not to have to overhear chit-chat about the latest scripts in development of how much a film made on opening weekend. I really felt like I was in another town altogether.

As a spa writer, I came for the spa review but fell in love with every aspect of the hotel from the bright, modern, clean decor of the rooms (all turquoise and browns with pops of yellow and great surf photo prints! ) to the service, bloody mary bar (in concept only, I’m on a diet!) and out of control restaurant (The Vessel Restaurant – oh the food!). How about a hang by the pool with a (free!) chair massage by the incredible Pete whose hands are like psychic mits that just hone in on your pain.

Heaven? Yah, I can get used to this.

The Spa Terre is lovely and understated. Just the right amount of charm and comfort. Not over the top lavish but super adorable and pretty. The little spa gift shop sells so many of my favorite products lines, I knew off the bat that this place was organized with great taste in mind (wink wink). Like most hotel spas they offer the gamut of luxury and therapeutic massages and facials, mani + pedis and pregnancy massage. I had, what I think may have been the best massage of my life. I am not kidding. The only problem was I couldn’t fully relax because I was brainstorming how to get this guy Pete to move to LA and work on my and all my friends. He was that good. I’ll be honest, most hotel massages are very frou-frou, understandably, as most people are looking to relax with a lame Swedish massage. I want the works, you know – a deep, therapeutic sports massage that bordelines physical therapy! And that’s what I got. Of course Pete, asked me many questions first ,about what was going on as said, ok, let’s get to work. And he did, with laser like focus on a pinched muscle situation in my neck and shoulder blade. I was blown away.

After that I took a simple steam and shower, nothing fancy, slipped into my favorite spa robe ( I forget the brand but I have actually ordered them before!) and relaxed before slipping into jeans, flip-flops and a sweatshirt (thank you for the casual island-like vibe, San Diego!) and headed to the hotel restaurant (The Vessel Restaurant) for a meal that took me totally by surprise. Let’s face it, hotel restaurants can be pretty mediocre. This place was the opposite. The food was not precious and faux-elegant which I cannot stand. The like plates were like what you would see at Laurel Hardware or something in the hip LA foodie scene.   can always tell by the sides what kind of world of food the chef is working in. One peek at the sauteed caramelized kale with bacon and apples, beans & greens with baby green beans, snap peas, edamame, basil and arugula, cast iron carrots with ginger, hazelnut, dried cranberry – I knew I was right in my pocket. We literally tasted everything and not one item disappointed. And yes, I ate some leftover salmon and scallops for breakfast and it was heaven.

I felt like Kona Kai Resort & Spa was a major “find” and so excited to put it into my weekend getaway mix. If I hear “let’s go to Palm Springs” one more time I think I’ll puke.

While I took this opportunity to make this a getaway from kids (no offense kids!) and took my boyfriend, it’s just as cool to come with kids. There is so much to do here (sure, the San Diego zoo has to be close by, I assume!) in the Marina! Boat rentals, and action sports of all kinds. Both mornings, we grabbed coffee from the poolside coffee bar and took a long walk along the gorgeous Marina and watched people hop in boats, kayaks, paddle boards and more.

Be sure to book a room with a Marina view. At night, just a few feet across the walking path on the slip of beach are little bonfire areas with cozy chairs – you can build one and watch the boats as the night sky envelops you.

Time slowed down, the days felt long and languid. The Kona Kai Resort & Spa is a true escape from the Hollywood grind.

The Organic Spa Magazine : Experience Wellness and Travel, held at the Beverly Wilshire

November 1, 2015

FullSizeRender-1The Organic Spa Magazine event Experience Wellness and Travel, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on October 28th was nothing short of spectacular. A virtual BEST OF the leading edge experts in wellness were there to share their top of the line products in a friendly and generous way.

My first stop was a bee line to the space set up by ROSEWOOD MAYAKOBA Spa and Resort. They offered a private Shaman healing experience. Count me in. I was saged, smudged, and hugged by a beautiful saint who sent me on my way with words of wisdom and advice. The spa director, Emmanuel Arroyo was kind enough to gift me with a beautiful box set of miniature bath and shower oils. Highlight of the night!

Next up, I pursued the WELL PEOPLE makeup line, where the tag line read: BE BRAVE. BE BEAUTIFUL. BE YOU.  Yes please! The makeup I took home and tried included non-toxic mascara, a pigment stick (vibrant!), and a highlighter to create magic on the cheekbone.  I have to say, I’m thoroughly impressed. The products deliver without being harmful to my skin. I look glow-y and natural with that “I’m not wearing makeup” vibe we all strive for. I’m chomping at the bit to try their cover sticks and foundation for a flawless and harmless result.

Lastly, I ended the night with an incredible swag bag flowing to the brim with so many wonderful goodies. I cannot wait to explore each and every product and follow up with you guys. Organic Spa magazine founder, Beverly Maloney-Fischback and Megan Boles of Murphy O’ Brien PR put together a lovely, tasteful evening of exceptional food, top of the line wellness products, and an overall beautiful, wellness experience. As a wellness practitioner myself but someone new to the LA wellness scene, I was blown away with what’s on Organic Spa’s hit list of goodies. Thank you for bringing it, Organic Spa!

Hotel Casa Del Mar – Spa in the city by the sea

August 30, 2015

I’ve always loved Hotel Casa Del Mar for the simple reason – it’s a sexy, chic, classic hotel on the Santa Monica beach that makes me feel like I’m a million miles away, in less than a 20 minute drive my home in Hollywood. I’ve met girlfriends for cocktails, had blind dates, a romantic brunch with my boyfriend, spent a day writing by the shore. It’s a gift I give to myself a couple of times a year.

But who knew they had a lovely top notch spa? I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to figure that out (#duh!).

Sea Wellness Spa - Reception 05

Located literally steps from the beach in Santa Monica, the spa offers some exciting innovative ways to de-stress after life in the big city or a day in the sun.

At the hotel’s Sea Wellness Spa, I recently experienced the 90 minute Diamond Magnetic Body Ritual—a luxurious treatment that purifies the body and mind, helping eliminate the effects of the electromagnetic pollution caused by the stress of our daily lives. The treatment begins with a balancing of chakras with gems, followed by a luminous mud with diamond dust applied to the body. Finally, guests are treated to a massage using magnetic tools. The ritual results in increased energy and stress relief. Oh yes, times ten please!

Additionally offered at the sister property Shutters on The Beach, the hotel is offering a mindfulness-inspired wellness package available for corporate and leisure groups, designed to help guests practice a mindful lifestyle and reduce stress. The hotel has partnered with renowned wellness expert John Sahakian to offer AIRR (Automatic Integrative Relaxation Response), private sessions with instruction on the principles of body, environment, and mind which include practicing a range of relaxation methods and breathing exercises taught by a local expert. The sessions can be tailored to meet the specific needs of groups, whether it’s for an all-day company retreat, a brief session to kick off a business meeting, or a way for bachelorette parties to decompress and bond and can incorporate other amenities such as yoga on the beach.

Sea Wellness Spa - Sitting Area 01

Looking for a getaway in town? Want to feel like you’re a vacation for a few years. Trust me, book a day at the spa, enjoy the ocean breeze, relax, repeat. Ahhh…!

How to Book the Best Weekend Getaway for the whole family

May 10, 2015

Last week I posted on my friend’s wall that I couldn’t support her in Cornelius’ Corepower torture chamber because I would be at a crafting event all weekend.  Astutely, she replied, “In college, I never thought I would ever hear your name and crafting in the same sentence.”  And she’s right.  It’s not my thing.  Nothing sounds worse than weaving or sewing or gluing or pasting.  Except maybe doing it on a stationary bike in a sweaty hot room with DeBarge blasting and my kids whining.  But, there are things I would do for my boys that I would not do for any man in college.  So I agreed to meet my girlfriend and expert crafter, Kelly with her three kids at Karen Kimmel and Stacy Bernstein’s annual Crafting Community event at the Ace hotel in Palm Springs. At first it was an excuse for some bonding time with my oldest and middle son, but it turned into one of the greatest weekends I’ve had in a long time.   Oh, and the kids had fun too.

An outrageously talented team of artists, mothers, and pretty much “mind readers on what would make a mother in her 40’s feel like she was in heaven,”  took over the entire hotel and filled each inch with thought, heart and passion.  From the moment you arrived, you were bombarded with gifts from LA’s coolest “artsy mom shops.”  It was like being a guest on “Oprah’s Favorite Things” episode. Once you and your kids are done “oohing and awing” over all the cool shit packed tight in your gifted, brand new TOMS Bag (translation: kids fight, punch,  grab,  and steal for gems they must have but will never touch again), you head downstairs to an enormous “Fiesta Dinner” followed by an ice cream party sponsored by the impossibly delicious Salt and Straw. To close out your first night is an epic, cut throat, family Bingo game with over the top prices by Sprinkles Cupcakes, Undefeated, TOMS, Salt and Straw, and tons more.

Saturday morning started with a 7am ride in the pop up Soul Cycle studio overlooking the hotel pool. Angela Davis, whose classes sell out in seconds, was there three times a day guiding us on a perfectly suited 45 minute inspirational ride to physical strength and mental well-being.  I was definitely not in the “instructor as spiritual guide” camp before I met her.  But I have to say, I do agree with her that “I’m too blessed to stress.” At least I was while I was there. She really is THAT good. UNDEFEATED also hosted circuit training classes all day.  There were skateboarding clinics, yoga classes, hip hop classes, underwater photography classes, and I haven’t even MENTIONED a craft yet!!!

The crafts were RIDICULOUS.  Totally over the top, drop dead gorgeous.  This was not your basic “lets make lanyards and sing Kumbaya” crafts.  This was “I’m a serious artist and you and your toddler get to join my world for two days while I run around sweating my ass off to make sure every kid and grown up is happy” kind of craft .  This was real leather jewelry. Weaving that retails for hundreds of dollars. And if only I were high, really really high, I could have joined all the blissful mommies who sat there for hours weaving their way to happiness.

But I wasn’t. So I didn’t.  I did find my own nirvana. It wasn’t necessarily bonding WITH my kids. They pretty much wanted nothing to do with me from the second we arrived. We were more like young toddlers co-playing.  NEAR each other, but not WITH each other. Both groups completely happy and content with what we were doing and only slightly aware of the other person’s presence. There were lots of moments of bliss.  But I think my favorite was spinning on a Saturday night as the sun went down watching my kids wrestling and laughing in the pool below making the perfect amount of noise and not causing any judgement or sideways glance from the host of other like minded parents that know sometimes “fun” is “loud.”  And “wrestling” is the boy equivalent to “cuddling. ”

The weekend was pricy ($2,300.00), but when I looked around at all that was offered, it seems impossible that anyone, except the Ace hotel and my massage therapist,  actually made money.  It was clearly a labor of love and an opportunity to bring families and a community together. I didn’t make it to the Desert Disco, but like my kids consoled me in the morning, “There’s always next year mom.”

I can’t wait!
