parenting class to the rescue: Parenting on the Same Team from the Center for Emotional Education

August 11, 2015

“Our Theory…. Emotional health is key to the overall health and development of the individual, family, the community at large, and our species in general. We believe that the work we do within the home, school, and therapy setting — supporting social and emotional learning, for the benefit of children and peace within the family — has the power to positively affect the state of the entire planet. Successful emotional processing makes for successful people. That means academically, financially, and socially. It’s a win-win for the child and for humankind.”

I discovered Natalie Christensen, CPDPE on Annapurnaliving.com – the VERY cool site and work of Carrie Ann Moss (yes, of Matrix fame).

Natalie Christensen is a mother, step-mother, writer, artist, parent coach, and certified Positive Discipline parent educator. Her aim is to support mothers, fathers, children, and teachers in developing powerful emotional support systems that pave the way for lifelong success and happiness. Christensen is a founder of The Center for Emotional Education, and co-creator of Feeleez.

I found myself lost in her site, Feeleez last nightI am always finding myself on the edge of total parenting desperation. I scared the crap out of my my kids last night when I finally, after two hours of my son refusing to go to bed, just screamed, out of nowhere, Gena Rowlands style, “I CAN’TTTT!!!!” I caught my 9 daughter flinch in fear and quickly pretend nothing happened. It was awful. I collapsed into tears in the hallway. Only to have my kids run to “make me feel better.” It was classic disaster-pareting. I have had enough. I jumped back on to Natalie’s site to sign up for her e-course within the hour. I honestly don’t think I can wait until October.

Being a parent can feel natural but good parenting so often does not come naturally. I am the first to admit, I am often clueless. I don’t ask for help nearly enough, and now I have.

Parenting on the Same Team is an acclaimed ecourse offered through the Center for Empathy several times per year. It is designed to be done in community, with space made for questions and discussions throughout, but can also be done individually as a homecourse – and can be found in the SHOP.

Parenting on the Same Team is meant to be a guide to shift parenting from a paradigm in which children and parents are on opposing sides, toward one in which all family members work together, cooperatively finding their way through classic family struggles. It is compatible with natural parenting and Positive Discipline.

The course runs for seven weeks and is followed by an additional seven-week course, with further detail and study, if desired.
