I’ve been a Paperless Post user for years. And they only get better. I am actually overwhelmed by how great the designs are, so much, that I decided to forgo using my original art work and just use theirs. Yes, it’s aesthetically approved on so many levels! They do design partnerships with so many incredible designers…you simply will fall in love.

Venice Family Clinic’s Art Walk & Auctions Launches 39th Season with Three World-Renowned Artists: Alexis Smith, Sam Durant and Ed Moses

May 1, 2018

Venice Family Clinic (www.venicefamilyclinic.com) presents its iconic 39th Venice Family Clinic’s Art Walk & Auctions on Sunday, May 20, from noon to 6 p.m. at Google’s Venice Headquarters. Both the biggest art walk in Southern California and the largest public event held by the tech giant, the space will be transformed into an art gallery for the occasion, where guests can enjoy free access to the work of 250 contemporary artists, including such luminaries as John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha and Alison Saar as well as LA’s emerging talent—all with the goal of exceeding the $800,000 raised last year and supporting the Clinic’s mission to provide quality health care to those in need.

This year’s event honors three world-renowned Venice-based artists: signature artist Alexis Smith, an LA-based collage and installation artist, who has exhibited extensively from the Whitney to MOCA; along with honorees Sam Durant, known for his social artwork and who has a strong personal connection, having once been a beneficiary of the services himself; and Ed Moses, one of the City’s most experimental artists and a former honoree, posthumously. Durant has created a limited-edition piece appropriately titled “Everyone Deserves Healthcare,” which he describes as embodying the spirit of everything Venice Family Clinic does.

The fundraiser features exhibitions as well as a silent auction along with engaging community activations from live art exhibits curated by artist Bert Rodriguez to guided art workshops taught by local artisans, live music and craft beer & wine garden along with a bevy of food trucks, dog daycare and bike valet. The musical lineup includes Parker Ainsworth, Dervish, Lacey Cowden, Jonny Boy, DANKE and Foxtrails, all playing 45-minute sets beginning at noon. For a $50 donation, guests enjoy special access to dozens of artists’ studios. View a select number of works and bid early on paddle8.com/auction/venice-family-clinic starting May 8th.

Hotel Erwin is offering Walk the (Venice) Art Walk package, encouraging art lovers to ditch their cars for an art-caytion at the beach that weekend. For information on the event, visit https://theveniceartwalk.org

Brushes, Blushes and Acne: A Primer In DIY Blush

April 30, 2018

So you’ve fixed your skin care routine and you’ve cleaned your brushes but you’re still experiencing breakouts. Your foundation and primer is oil free and yet, every time you apply your makeup, you seem to start to get acne but you can always try a face wash for acne prone skin.

Well, it may be due to your blush…Blushes instantly wake up the face, give you a glow and can exist with nothing else on the face.

But here are a few things about blush. Few blushes are labeled as noncomedogenic, that is, they won’t block your pores and cause acne.

Blushes and bronzers contain talc. This is an ingredient you want to avoid, as it clogs the skin and causes acne. Talc combines with sebum and oil in the pores. Once clogged they act as a base for bacteria and grime leading to breakouts.

The red dye in your blush may also come from coal tar which also has a similar effect. It has been shown to be comedogenic.

Bronzers contain ingredients that hold the entire product together and make it spreadable. You’re better off using a bronzer from a mineral line instead, as these don’t tend to cause acne.

Also, if your are real DIY,  make your own blush at home from natural ingredients such as:

Beetroot powder: We all know the rich red hue that comes from beets. Turns out this tuber is not just for coloring up your salads but can be used for adding color to your cheeks as well. In addition to that, it is rich in folate and helps the skin repair itself.

Cocoa powder: Cocoa has anti-oxidant properties and is very useful as a blush for its deep brown tint. For cosmetic purposes, use the best variety of cocoa available.

Hibiscus powder: This is a vibrant flower that comes in shades of yellow, red and pink. Its color can even out skin tone and increase the elasticity of the skin. This can also be used for the brighter shades of blush.

Arrowroot powder: This is a cream/red tuber and the root can be ground into a powder which can be used as a blush. It absorbs very easily into the skin and can also thicken your blush to some extent.

How to make your own DIY blush?

There are many guides out there for store bought blushes. But for DIY blushes you will have to mix and try various shades to match your skin tone. You can experiment with the colors until you find the right mix.

To start with, you must use ½ tsp of arrowroot powder. This acts as a base but is also the lightening agent. The more of this powder you use, the softer the shade of your blush turns.

Pink blush

Mix together in a bowl, ½ tsp of hibiscus powder, beet powder, arrowroot powder and cocoa powder. Blend and test on your face. This usually results in a warm pink tone that goes well with olive and medium tan complexions.

Red blush

For this shade, you can mix ½ tsp of hibiscus, beet and arrowroot powders. Combine for a deep red shade that goes with light and dark complexions.

Peach shade

For this barely-there makeup, you may want to add ½ tsp of arrowroot powder and beet powder. If you have peach petal available, then you can grind it down and add ½ tsp to the mix for a pretty, dewy, peach shade.

You can make small batches of these and store them in an airtight lid. Every time you use a brush to pick up the product, you add your skin cells and oils to the jar or container that stores them. Since these are natural products with no preservatives in them, they will last a few weeks.

It’s easy to make your own makeup at home, and blush seems to be the easiest. For those with continuous acne problems and frequent breakouts, you may want to watch the ingredients of your blush. If they contain coal tar, lanolin or other comedogenic ingredients, you may want to put them back on the shelf.

Look for noncomedogenic labels or you could try and make your own blush at home, using the ingredients we suggested. If you’re bold, you can even add turmeric or lemon powder to your mix. Try our DIY blushes and let us know how they work out for you!

BedJet – The Quiet, Cool Secret To A Perfect Night’s Sleep

April 24, 2018

Thank you BEDJET, for giving me life.

I have been a night-sweater for years. As in SWEATS as in I sweat a ton when I sleep and not as in wearing sweaters or sweats at night. Though I do love a cozy pair of sweats to sleep in. Ok, now that we have that clarified…Let me explain the sweats. I am talking drenching sheets and this has nothing to do with being old AF. It started in my 20s. I have hypothyroid and no idea how these night sweats connect to it, but it’s been so bad that I have had to get up and change several times a night. Let’s call it a NIGHTMARE. I have drenched mattress through sheets and towels and even those wetness protector thingies for babies who wet their beds…I have that too. I know this makes me sound incredibly sexy, but what the heck, come at me.

Alas, enter BedJet.

When I first heard about this portable system that cools (or warms!) you by sending a quiet stream of air into your bed while you sleep, I was beyond intrigued. I was obsessed and set upon a mission to see if BedJet could help with my nights of fire (since it seemed no doctor could make sense of them).

It seemed simple enough. A small machine to go under the bed, a pump, a special sheet and yes, a phone app or the handy remote control. I was sold, before even buying one.

When my BedJet arrived I was a little intimidated because I figured something this cool had to be totally complicated to get going. I left it in the box, just assuming I would be overwhelmed by technology. After a week, I braved myself, opened the box, took it out, and spent all of two minutes setting it up. It really was easier than doing laundry.

I use the configuration on the above LEFT, where it slides under my bed. I hide the tube part because it looks better hidden on the side away from my front door, somewhat out of site. Now that it’s set up and running, let’s just say it’s the biggest hit of the night. My kids are not only obsessed with my BedJet, they fight over it. They each want to sleep in my bed and be the one on the side of where it does its magic. For now, that is cooling and relishing in a night of zero sweats. I have not had a drip of sweat since using it, but not only that, it simply makes the bed the perfect sleeping temperature for everyone (and yes, that means my kids who crawl in my bed are loving the cool jets of air too).

Here are some basic facts about the BedJet.

BEDJET CONFIGURATIONS

• With a single BedJet V2 and a Dual Zone AirComforter configuration, you can cool or warm one side of the bed without disturbing the sleep temperature of the other side. The Dual Zone AirComforter creates two independent zones within the sheet, without putting a barrier between the sleeping partners.

For now, it’s all about cool flow…but I cannot wait for the winter to get all toasty.

• With a full BedJet V2 Dual Zone Climate Comfort System (consists of two BedJets and a Dual Zone sheet) you can cool or heat both sides of the bed simultaneously. This one is the mack daddy and great for two people. Boyfriend goals.

• With a single BedJet and a Single Zone AirComforter (the one I have ), you can make the entire bed one uniform temperatures.

BEDJET COOLING

• BedJet uses the convective and evaporative method for keeping you cool in bed. The BedJet is NOT a portable AC unit. Even though it feels very cool in the sheets, so to speak.

• The BedJet pulls from the coolest air in the room – the room from the floor – and circulates it through your bedding to cool you off. This is incredibly effective for bedroom temperatures under 79 degrees, and works best in bedrooms that are 78-79 degrees F and cooler.

BEDJET SOUND

BedJet has special acoustic damping technology built into the case and air delivery system. This makes it one of the quietest sources of air from any small consumer appliance.

The noise totally soothing background white noise and similar to your household HVAC register and truth be told, part of my favorite PART of the whole thing. Since I’m a crappy sleeper, I often wake up, only to be quickly lulled back to sleep by the soothing sound of my Bed Jet.

BedJet’s highest fan speed and Turbo bed warming settings are extremely powerful and do generate more noticeable noise than this, but Turbo-heat mode is limited to running for maximum of 10 minutes. Turbo-heat is just too powerful for all night sleeping but it feels great when you get in – no other product can warm the bed by 30 degrees in five minutes like the BedJet! Typical all night sleep settings are with the fan speed set at around 50%, which is incredibly quiet. I seriously cannot wait until winter already, so I can snuggle in a warm cocoon.

Ok here are some cool numbers to nerd out over, for the Nasa tech bio hack freaks in the hizzy:

For equivalent CFM’ air flow, BedJet quieter than a $400 Dyson fan!

When installed in its natural home under the bed, the following are dB sound measurements take from the pillow:

• Measured Ambient Room Noise (BedJet off): 37dB

• BedJet Cool, 50% (most typical highest setting for all night cooling): 38dB

• BedJet Cool, 100% (unlikely to be used other than short bursts): 42dB

• BedJet Heat, 50%: (most typical highest setting for all night heating): 39dB

• BedJet Heat, 100%: (unlikely to be used other than short bursts): 43dB

• BedJet Burst Heat 100% (can only be used for 10 minutes before auto-shuttoff): 47dB

• The medium settings are quieter than any bedroom window fan or air conditioner.

BEDJET CORD

The BedJet cord length is limited in length for Underwriters Laboratories compliance. Its current length works for most installations. For situations where the cord does not reach the outlet, air hose extensions are available for purchase, giving you up to 8 feet total air hose length so you can put the BedJet anywhere you want close to an outlet. So far, I had no prob with this. It nicely extended to my outlet near the head of my bed.

I cannot wait to hear about your BedJet experience! And of course, don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions. I’ve had mine for a good month now!
