I first met Ashley Turner years ago when I was on my journey into the world of practicing and ultimately teaching yoga.  We were students together and 'retreat-mates' and I'll never forget this golden halo that seemed to follow her everywhere.

There was no doubt that Ashley's career would soon flourish.  She grew into a full on yogini, meditation teacher and mind-body psychotherapist,  named by Yoga Journal as "Who's Who in Power Yoga" and now sits on the faculty at Kripalu and Loyola Marymount University's Yoga Philosophy.  Can you say OM(G)?!

Now, she's bringing her expertise to the Spa Montage Laguna Beach with her  “E-volve” Wellness workshop and retreat series

Featuring workshops and a variety of quarterly retreats, each session is themed in alignment with the natural cycles of the solar calendar to target and address common mind-body issue areas for the time of year.

Each of the retreats will include two-hour, twice daily yoga and meditation workshops and one customized 60 or 120 minute Surrender treatment to rebalance and address each client’s specific constitutional challenges.  B-R-E-A-T-H-E will me, people.

Each workshop is priced from $65 and includes a full day at Spa Montage with access to steam, sauna, relaxation areas and Oceanfront Spa Lap Pool.

Talk about chillin' in the winter.

Tara finally jumps on the lash bandwagon and tries LuxLash in Bev Hills.

LuxLash, coined as the nation’s first specialty lash and brow spa, is the ultimate destination for brow shaping, eye brightening and the spas signature treatment, lash extensions.

Located across from Sprinkles in Bevy Hills, the LuxLash spa is clean and bright, with a welcoming staff of the lash technicians, all uniquely qualified, with over 100 hours of lash training.

After picking my desired lash length and fullness, single strands of lightweight synthetic eyelashes were applied one lash at a time to my own lashes. The process roughly took 90 minutes, to apply some 120 lashes.  But relaxing under my warm blanket while listening to the tunes of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, the minutes slipped away. And when I opened my eyes I was completely amazed. Long, thick beautiful, natural looking lashes.

Lash extensions generally last 2 months depending on proper care and lash growth. And maintenance is a snap. Plus no more applying mascara, curling lashes or using lotions. Oh, my!

I was so ecstatic – I cheerfully floated to the reception desk and made an appointment for my complementary one week follow up.  This touch-up appointment gives clients a week to decide if they want to add more length or thickness.  I admit I loved my look so much, I just added a little more fullness and was ready to bat my new lashes under the mistletoe.

xx

Ringing in 2011 with hot, hot colorist Vanessa Spaeth at Andy LeCompte

January 2, 2011

Yo!!

So many awesome things on the horizon for Groomed L.A. this year.  Major expansions well beyond the world of skin-deep beauty.  I'm talking home beauty, interiors/architecture/design, food, art, etc.  The Beautiful Life is abundant!  And our mission is to share a little of this beauty with you every day.   🙂

That being said, we will always be super on top of the best of the best of all things to make you feel and look beautiful in L.A.

And so I bring you, Vanessa Spaeth, wicked brill colorist at my all time fave salon Andy LeCompte (talk about visually stunning – it's a pitch perfect match to design aesthetic).

An L.A. native, she's been banging out the "beachy highlight summer surfin' in the 'Bu" look since she was 18.  But getting your sun-kissed glow on is just the beginning. Vanessa is a master color corrector (got effed up color?…she's your woman).  The celeb set has been known to line up for her to tone down their over-processed tresses and bring the gloss back.  She's a master with brunettes.  Seriously, my rich brown mane has more depth than Avitar in 3-D.   She's got a fierce eye for color and skin tone and basically, I'd say, don't say anything.  As in, she's the kind of colorist whose chair you just plop in and say, "go to town."

Cosmetic derm/beauty expert Dr. Oscar Hevia gives the down low fact vs. fiction about old-school home beauty remedies. Take a look! You might just be WASTING YOUR TIME WITH BULL DINKY!

December 28, 2010

Hope everyone had a fab xmas!  Just thought I'd give you a little post holiday distraction with this cute little piece on home beauty remedies – and what the deal-e-o is, as in: DO THEY WORK OR ARE THEY BULLDINKY?

Below, Dr. Hevia addresses some beauty concerns in a series of fact or fiction questions in hopes of putting these old-school home remedies to rest.

Dark Under-Eye Circles: To get rid of dark under-eye circles, apply cucumber juice under the eyes with cotton balls.

FICTION! Dark circles under the eyes are essentially dead fat, despite all the cucumber slices you see placed on the eye on TV.

FACT! The only thing that can help under-eye circles are items containing vitamin K, which can help shrink the blood vessels so they're not as dark. At home products include spinach, collards and turnips, to name a few.

Varicose Veins: To avoid varicose veins, don't take a shower after exercising.

FICTION! This would not address the underlying causes or known risk factors for varicose veins—such as heredity, prolonged standing, pregnancy, advanced age, obesity or sedentary lifestyle. It can be argued that standing in the hot shower for a prolonged period without moving your legs could be problematic, but most people do move their legs while showering. In fact exercise may reduce the risk for varicose veins.

FACT! Exercise, good posture, sitting with your legs straight and wearing non constricting clothing are some ways to assist in preventing varicose veins. Unfortunately, the only way to treat would be through treatments such as Asclera, an injection therapy, a non-surgical procedure in which a solution is injected into the problem varicose veins or spider veins.

Stretch Marks: Cocoa Butter can correct stretch marks.

FICTION! Stretch marks are tears in your collagen and cocoa butter cannot fix tears that are under the surface.

FACT! A lotion with vitamin a, vitamin c, peptides and even onion juice.

Blemishes: To prevent acne, don't eat chocolate or soda.

FICTION! There is no scientific evidence linking ingestion of chocolate or soda to worsening acne symptoms. The only foods currently theorized to worsen acne are non-organic dairy products and possibly seafood—especially shellfish.

FACT! When you wake up in the morning with a big pimple, just grab a tube of plain white toothpaste and dab it on.  Let the toothpaste dry for 15 minutes or so.  Also, do not use whitening or brightening and red toothpastes or anything with cinnamon flavoring toothpastes because they can burn or irritate your skin.

Pores: Cold water will shrink your pores

FICTION! Your pore size is genetic, not much will change the size. Cold water constricts blood vessels so skin only feels tighter.

FACT! You can minimize their appearance on the surface. When pores are clogged with oil and dead skin, they look bigger. A product with salicylic acid cleans them out. Pores also stretch as you lose collagen.

December’s Luxury Hotel of the month. DELAIRE GRAFF – The Definition of Wine Country Luxury.

December 27, 2010

Delaire Graff Estate-009268-04

Some people dream of sugar plums this time of year.   I'm thinking about how far I can possibly get from all things artificial, commercial and frankly, American.  While the holiday season has been a blast so far…keeping up the Santa rouse for my 4.5 year old (how long do I have to do that for?), a new baby to celebrate, delectable treats to feel guilty about bingeing on everywhere I turn, the spirit of giving in the air (though not in my wallet)…the recent night fall of fake-snow at the Grove has put me over the edge. The phoniness of life in L.A. comes to a head this time of year which makes wanna hightail it out of the country, altogether.

While I'm heading out for two weeks in Canada, it's not exactly the Delaire Graff Estate, in South Africa.

Jim Tobler of the Kiwi Collection and WOW Travel reports on this luxury vineyard and lodge, where the two main wine regions of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek become one.

The nearly-sky-high vista was originally used by the French Huguenots as a lookout point for incoming ships.  The ground now bears the fruit of their imported viticulture knowledge.  Of course, that's not all.  Delaire Graff Estate is a master-planned destination.  Mountain peaks passively watch over the sprawling grounds, providing a natural frame to the art strewn about the estate. The 10 lodges are beyond private, and farther beyond any sort of ordinary.  Airy, modern, and welcoming, spaces feature David Collins furnishings, double height ceilings, and views of surrounding hills and vineyards.  Some even boast private infinity pools for those inclined to skinny dip at sunset.

Food and wine are obviously features, with bottles born of the very soil that surrounds you.  Food is fresh, local, and innovative, served outdoors or in.

The story goes on, with a Swiss spa, hiking, nearby golf, and local culture.

Guests have the pleasurable dilemma of deciding for themselves what to do.
