Five vitamins that help build muscle strength and tone

Muscle is mainly made up of protein. Therefore, protein metabolism (breaking protein down into amino acids and combining those amino acids into new proteins) is critical for muscle building. SARMs are becoming a popular supplement alternative which are being used by bodybuilders to build muscle and gain strength, however, the products are still relatively unknown by most people – more information of SARMs for sale can be found here, for those who are interested. Collagen is also made of protein and is the connective tissue in muscle that anchors muscles to bone. In addition, muscle function is dependent on energy production. The energy used by all cells is called ATP. Glucose (carbohydrate) is a key fuel for ATP production. We use glucose as the main fuel to produce energy in all cells, including muscle cells.

1. Vitamin D plays a very important role in immune and muscle function. There are numerous studies showing that vitamin D is essential for overall immune system function. Studies have shown that proper vitamin D levels in the body are associated with muscle strength and performance.

USANA research shows that to have an optimal range of vitamin D in the body, most people need to take 4000 to 6000 IU supplemental vitamin D every day. USANA’s Vitamin D supplement has 2000 IU of vitamin D per tablet. Keep in mind that vitamin D is also required for the uptake and utilization of calcium and phosphorous—and both of these minerals are required for muscular contraction and function as well as bone growth and strength. Phosphorous is also required for ATP production and energy metabolism.

2. Fish Oil or the omega-3 fats in fish oil may decrease muscle protein breakdown. This may be through improvements in insulin sensitivity, and insulin resistance is associated with muscle breakdown. There is also a new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showing that fish oil helps enhance the effect of strength training in elderly women. Fish oil is most commonly obtained through supplements and food, such as a variety of fish.

3. Vitamin C is important for our muscles, and we need it to function properly. Vitamin C is required for collagen and elastin synthesis, and it is also an important supplement to take daily because it’s responsible for the health of the blood vessels, which support the muscles’ needs for oxygen and nutrients. Good sources of vitamin C include broccoli, tomatoes, strawberries, and grapefruit.

4. Vitamin E is a very important antioxidant that helps cell membrane recovery from oxidative stress. Cell membrane reliability is essential for cellular function and growth. To add vitamin E into your diet, try almonds, spinach, carrots, and avocados. Many different oils are also good sources of vitamin E, such as olive oil, corn oil, canola oil, and sunflower oil.

5. An array of B vitamins are essential to muscle strength and tone. B1 (thiamin) is important for protein metabolism and the formation of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen to cells, including muscle cells, and without oxygen energy, production is compromised. B1 nutrients can be found in cereal, bread, meat, rice, and nuts. B2 (riboflavin) is involved in energy metabolism, glucose metabolism, the oxidation of fatty acids, with some effects on protein metabolism. B2 nutrients can be found in cheese, eggs, milk, and peas. B3 (niacin) is essential for energy production. B3 nutrients can be found in milk, eggs, fish, legumes, and potatoes. B6 (pyridoxine) is important for protein metabolism, growth, and carbohydrate utilization. B6 nutrients can be found in soybeans, butter, brown rice, and fish. And B12 (cyanocobalamin) is important for the maintenance of nerve tissue and is essential for the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, energy metabolism, and cell regeneration. B12 nutrients can be found in milk, poultry, eggs, meat, and liver. B7 (biotin) is important for amino acid metabolism, and amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Good sources of B7 include mushrooms, egg yolk, beef liver, and brewer’s yeast.

Sentara: Plump Effect Serum Bio Relaxing Serum

Plump Effect Serum Bio Relaxing Serum

Woo-015_1z

I first learned about (and subsequently became a believer in)  Hyaluronic Acid  a few years back when my aesthetician gave me samples of Skinceuticals Phloretin CF.  Hyalogic.com descibes Hyaluronic Acid as "hyaluronan or hyaluronate, is a carbohydrate, more specifically a mucopolysaccharide occurring naturally throughout the human body. It can be several thousands of sugars (carbohydrates) long."

I had no prior knowledge of the chemical structure, I just know it works.  And works well.  After a few months of using this my skin was smoother, cleared and actually seemed to glow (YES).   At $159 it was a high monthly expense. I categorized it under other "essentials" such as food, water and shelter and called it a day.  Funny how that works.

Sentara has rejuvenated my love for Hyaluronic Acid and at nearly half the price.  If you have the extra money in your beauty bank try this product – its simple yet highly effective.  After 5 days of use I see my skin looking clearer, tone even, and yes even that glowy radiance effect is peeking out.

Additional equally relevant ingredients:
Inca Inchi: hydrates and rejuvenates.
Acai: Antioxidant and vitamin concentrate.
Natural Silica: boosts the effectiveness of the cream's phyto active ingredients.
Thalassine: Bio-relaxing marine extract which helps to relax facial muscles and smooth out facial lines and wrinkles.
Aloe Vera: Moisturizes, repairs and protects the skin against ageing.
**Angels sing  Hyaluronic Acid: hydrates & stimulates the natural protective properties of your skin's collagen.

The Official site is below (however it is in french and I don't know if the serum can be bought here):http://www.sentaraskincare.com/

An uber hip apothecary in Brooklyn with an LA sells it:

The Broot, an awesome natural hair beautifying treatment bar hits Montana

December 9, 2012

The Broot  :: Adorable beauty venue situated at 1626 Montana Ave.  Equipped with a treatment menu of ingredients ranging from egg, honey, avocado and more.  Apply heat , rinse and revel in your shiny locks.

——————————————————————————————————-
A new beauty concept specializing in natural hair beautifying treatments (think: avocado, egg, mayonnaise) on lovely Montana Ave.
Entering,  I was immediately greeted by the super sweet staff.  Shortly thereafter directed to their wall/menu describing the various ingredients (and their stealth beauty powers).  My stylist, Sabrina (Blow Out QUEEN ) saw that my hair was fine and suggested avocado, honey and banana.  Shaking her head she said “mayo and egg may will just weigh your hair down”.
Off to the wash basins we went, Sabrina applied the home made mix, then wrapped my wet tresses up and placed me under heat for 15.  Sabrina rinsed me and gave me one of the best blowouts.  Ever.  In and out in under an hour.
The space is charming.  Moss green ceiling,  minimal yet modernish furnishings.  If cute dressed up as a beauty bar this very well might be it.
The second beauty child of Bellacures founder and entrepreneur whiz woman Samira Asemanfar, The Broot has one location currently.  They're open from 9:00 am -9:00 pm 7 days a week.  Sabrina said “you’d be surprised, some girls come in at night, get the mask and then head home.”
One demographic seems to rule here:  affluent Westside Moms and their tots.
Let’s face it this is a luxury treatment.  Albeit an affordable luxury ($35 for hair masque w/ wet hair braided, add $25 for a blowout).  I also noticed a pair of friends celebrating one of their birthdays.  Looked like they were getting the treatment then off to dinner.

Oh and back to that blowout.  Sabrina.  She’s phenomenal.  A blow dry maven.  My hair looked and felt fab after she was done.
Bottom line: a fun idea from time to time.  My hair felt great afterwards and the treatment is affordable enough I would consider adding to my monthly beauty lineup.

1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
1 Tablespoon Jojoboa Oil

How to blend:

We recommend using a food processor:

Toss in the banana
Pour in 1 oz. of water
Begin to blend for 45 secs.
Add remaining 1oz. of water
Blend again
Add Egg, oils, and honey
Blend for 1.5 min to ensure that there are no chunks left
When you pour into your bowl or bottle, use a strainer to get all the banana pieces out – otherwise it make sit harder to wash out of your hair

Little Play Spaces – Beauty Parlor – when you’re burnt out on Kitchens and Dollhouses…

I may write about ways to make ourselves look and feel good but when it comes to my near 7 year old girl, I am adamant about protecting her from absorbing negative statements about the female-beauty relationship. Because, they are ALL AROUND US.

The beauty industry is built on our insecurities and I believe there is a way to turn that around.  I am all about teaching Aria that beauty comes from within. I cringe at the thought of her thinking that her sense of self and confidence starts on the outside. That being said, I am not afraid to be honest about how relaxing a mani-pedi can be or how great it feels to get my hair washed and cut!  I am obviously someone who loves the ritual and all the sense-stimulation of grooming.  And I want to teach that to Aria. She will not be able to avoid any of it, so I am embracing it, armed with a sense of power and knowledge. She truly believes that putting on nail polish is a form or artistic expression and has nothing to do with "looking pretty!"

I always stress that pampering is a time to relax, to feel nurtured and taken care of, and the goal is to have quiet time and to FEEL GOOD.  I don't talk about it as a means to LOOKING good and especially not for someone else.  I brush her knotty hair and say "wow, look how yummy that feels, so smooth and soft!" and I have her concentrate on the senses and textures, not on how it LOOKS.  There is a way to steer our girls into understanding that there is grooming to feel good, taken care of and nurtured and grooming to please others, fit in and morph into someone we are not.  Seeing as we will always be bombarded with a world full of images that make young girls and women feel less than, I say we take back our power, not by avoiding it altogether and sheltering them from the stuff but by embracing the culture of beauty in a healthy way.  That it is about HEALTH and TAKING CARE OF ONESELF. I go to the gym every single day. My daughter knows this. I do not want her to see it as a compulsion but rather, mommy loves to exercises it makes her feel good and it keeps her heart pumping strong, and the stronger it is the more love she has to give!

I was obsessed with Little Play Spaces FRENCH CAFE last year. We wore it down to the bone.  And we already had a castle.  So this year my BIG Hanukkah gift to Aria is the the retro inspired Beauty Parlor and Spa.

It's made entirely from cardboard. It's 3 sides fold out and flip-up to form a Velcro attached enclosed space with roof. The mint green exterior has vintage-feel color stickers that harken back to the kind of salon our mothers would have frequented, and we wish were still in existence. .

Inside there is an illustrated shelf with more perfumes and shampoos and pop-up shelves and cubbies for storing (hiding!) all of Aria's junk!

There's a 'Styled By’ plaque for whomever that day's stylist is and a scalloped mirror and a tri-fold ‘spa menu’ with such treatments as 'Foot Massage' and Princess Curls and extra spaces for kids to dream up their own treatments and pricing.

This is the kind of toy that every family member can enjoy.  Younger girls can makeover their dolls and older girls can use their resourcefulness by adding stacks of towels, a bowl of fruit, cucumber water and making appointment books.

With the Little Play Spaces Beauty Parlor, every day could be Mother’s Day (well for a while, anyway).

Fake Bake!

December 7, 2012

Fake Bake very generously sent the Groomed-LA offices a myriad of products including Shimmer Instant Tan Lotion Wash, Tanning Butter for Dry Skin, and LipoBronze.

With so many self tanners and bronzers on the market,  the past few years have left me with a sinking feeling of sheer OVERWHELM.  What product won't streak? Doesn't stink and most importantly will leave me a golden bronzey glow?  Fake Bake is straightforward:  what you see is what you get. The beautiful, bronzey, just right shade applied is what is left on your skin.  No time released actions or darkening stage here.  Added bonus: each product comes with a pair of latex application gloves so as not to stain your hand, bathroom counters or anything else.

A true bronzing product as opposed to a self tanning product.  A great idea for those beauty commitment phobes amongst us (and let's face it when it comes to self tanners we all should be a little weary). Aside from the great instant color achieved this product also claims to firm and tone skin and have anti-cellulite benefits.  While I am unsure my toosh is that much tighter after using this, I can tell you without doubt my pale winter skin looks warm and glowy.  None of you want to hear this, so I'll be short and sweet:  The most effective way to maintain toned, fit skin is by eating a healthy diet and exercise.  Isn't it so much easier to believe bronzer can firm our toosh and give us a six pack?  Beauty buff suggestion:  try it, the product is affordable, has fun packaging, complimentary application gloves and nice color.
