Hey Fellas: The Motley Launches New Scent

August 15, 2014

As I step into the artsy fartsy LINE Hotel in Koreatown and up to the Apartment Suite, I’m greeted by The Motley crew for the launch of the new Cyprus scent. Prior to the event, I wasn’t quite familiar with the brand, but after a few whiffs, I was sold.

The motley Cyprus-2oz

The Motley has a fragrance for every discerning man’s taste. Within the family of fragrances, “There’s a scent for every season,” said partner, Darren Criss. And with the launch of Cyprus, It brings to mind the mingling of saltwater, dry pine needles, ambergris and cedar with more unexpected notes like ginger and the smell of traditional shaving cream (great for fall or winter). For the cologne-wearer who prefers a clean, woodsy scent to darker, heavier fragrances. Like all colognes from The Motley, Cyprus is hand-compounded and poured in LA by artisanal perfumer Jacqueline Steele of Goest perfumes.

CUT, COLOR & AVEDA CONDITIONING AT SPOKE & WEAL on WEST THIRD ST

July 29, 2014

I have always been obsessed with Aveda products from the moment the brand made it’s debut.  As someone who lives for pure essential oils ( I cannot go a day without my dose of them in my nose, through my hair and all over my body ) Aveda is an obvious choice for the purity and authenricity of their products.

I was super thrilled to discover that master stylist, Jon Reyman and colorist Christine Thompson coming together to open Spoke&Weal, a full service Aveda Lifestyle salon, on West 3rd street ( right next to Toast!).

I checked out the massive, stunning space last week and Christine’s work on my horribly greying roots was nothing short of artful.  She studied the way my grey grows in, where it’s more white, where it’s more spotty, and matched the natural growth so that when it starts to grow in, say, where it is more white at the temples, the blond highlights in that specific area are lighter than elsewhere. It was not just ‘getting my roots did’ but a true science meets art meets beauty approach. My roots were matched perfectly to a my extremely detailed blonde highlighted situation and it was quite a tall order.  Christine finished off by infusing some much needed love to my naturally frazzled locks with an Aveda Botanical hair therapy treatment (or two!) that glossed, nourished and conditioned it – my hair looked 150% healthier, shiner and simply put – more stunning.   CAN I SAY THAT?  Yup, I totally can, because it has zero to do with me and everything to do with Christine’s knowledge, expertise and care.

I cannot wait to go back in a few weeks to see what Jon will do to shape and trim it. Grow hair grow so I can go get it cut!!

This salon is a must and so so so needed in this ‘hood.  Who wants to shlep to Bev Hills for hair all the time? Until now there was not one decent, let alone masterful, salon in the Fairfax area and now we have one to call our very own. YAY!

Rock out in Novica’s Amazing hammock and swing collection

July 27, 2014

Summer is deep in full swing, and the single item that has transformed my space to create the ultimate mid-summer chill vibe is my hammock swing from Novica.  The hammock is so obviously a summertime accessory must, however living the LA apartment life –  it never occurred to me to own one.  Then, I saw one inside my friends house, in the library, and flipped for it.  He generously gave me one and my whole family has been hooked all summer. Head over to Novica.com to check out the most gorgeous hand crafted global creations from local artisans world-wide.  The craftsmanship and attention to detail makes every item even more special.  The problem with the hammocks and swings is choosing – they are all so amazing for various reasons. It’s all in the details – pom poms, tassels, weaving styles – it’s impossible to decide!  I’m thinking of simply collecting a bunch and rotating.  I’m on my second now.  Here’s Aria, who has claimed this one as her own.  It’s the large deluxe Pate  ($89).  It spreads out when you sit in it and you can almost lie down or just curl up.  The most amazing this is she is doing her nightly dreaded reading in it because it makes it “fun” – HALALOOOYAHHH!!!!IMG_2158

The most amazing thing about the super ethical Novica is how it empowers artisans around the world by creating the opportunity to bring their work beyond the parameters of their local geographic scope.  Their business model has opened up a world of opportunity and is changing lives with every sale.  As a consumer, we get to say NO to child labor and sweat shops while honoring local artistic traditions and top-notch workmanship.  It’s truly incredible to take part in helping these amazing craftsmen and women perpetuate their traditions and operate their very own sustainable business.  The artists have total control of their shops – they create the prices, can run sales, withdraw products – they run their own show. And while you’re over there check out some of the other offerings – the rugs are spectacular.  And these pillows from India are beyond.

We just received this Sandy Beach ($89) version which I ordered because I loved the shape of the top part and it holds up to 260 pounds.  Aria’s review is it’s “prettier” but she loves the way the other one let’s her lie back more.  Basically, this one is more chair-like and forces her to sit upright. I see her point.  It’s definitely so pretty to look at and the workmanship is stunning, but the other style allows for a more lounge-vibe.   I think my next one will split the difference and I might go for a cotton one or simply a full on hammock!

Mika Fowler for brilliant, precision dry hair cuts at Kim Vo Salon

Mika is one of those world-reknown stylists who make you feel like you are not just having a “haircut” but some real art and science are being dropped on your head.  She is famous for a reason.  The woman knows hair – everything about it.  How it lays, how it acts, what it needs and most of all how her cut will best serve you.

When I sat in her chair (At the lovely uber-fancy Kim Vo Salon in the Montage hotel spa in Bev Hills) she did an extremely thorough intake: what the problems were, what she could do, what the next few months might look like, how it will sit, dry, and behave if it was cut like x, y or z.  This is the kind of attention every stylist should give to a client.

My issues, besides the straw-like ends from having my hair very bleached out (which I friggen love love love thank you to the one and only Dani Hernandez at Jonathan on CivicCenter Drive) but my last cut was done with a razor and there was a dramatic V in the back.  Too much, I think.  Mika agreed.  She decided to soften it (not blunt it as that would have made it too short) and unify the lengths so they flowed.  She fixed (and I mean fixed, as I had cut them myself) my strange bang situation and the overall cut was astonishing brilliant.

Oh, she cuts hair dry – straightening it first.  This is her thing – because it allows her to see the hair as it lives on your head during the day.  I loved my dry cut.  It made total sense.  I could also see the final story emerging as it was being told, so to speak.

I am going to finish out my year with Mika – until I simply HAVE to try someone else for a review. But I am happy as a clam and I am not budging.
