To Steam Clean, or Not to Steam Clean? Other Ways to Holistically Balance Your Hormones

February 27, 2015

“Yoni steaming,” aka vaginal steam cleaning, is getting a lot of buzz right now thanks to Gwyneth’s recent spa plug on GOOP.  It’s been used by Mayan, Asian, and other cultures for millennia, and is known for aiding in difficult or heavy menstruation – especially when used with herbs. But from a Western point of view, the physiological benefits are not well-studied, and on top of that, removing practices from the “whole” in any holistic approach is a recipe for disaster (or at least disappointment).

Beverly Hills-based OB-GYN Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz (as featured on Dr. Oz, SELF Magazine, & more), combines Ayurveda with conventional medicine to help create a healing, low-inflammation environment that coaxes a woman’s hormonal system back into healthy balance which of course restores looks and energy along the way.

Dr. Gilberg-Lenz says this treatment should be part of a larger, customized plan to truly optimize a woman’s specific health needs, such as menstruation, weight, fatigue, sex drive and overall vitality. As an OB-GYN and holistic health practitioner, here are my top 3 recommendations I give to my patients for holistic hormone balance, including a supplement (Asensia) that utilizes a blend of chasteberry and other ingredients to restore progesterone and estrogen to optimal levels.

1.  Retool your diet

Diet plays an enormous role in your hormone balance. Legumes and beans contain critical “signaling” molecules that help the body function properly. Omega-3 fatty acids (think fish or fish oil capsules) are key for mood, memory, heart health and metabolism functionality. And, sorry everyone: Soda isn’t doing you any favors! Components of carbonated drinks may contribute to bone loss, undoing the good work you’re doing with a calcium and magnesium-rich diet. Find a different drink you love to sip, like green tea, which is notable both for its cancer-fighting and metabolic properties. When we are feeding ourselves healthfully, we create a biochemical environment for our energy levels, looks and mood to thrive.

2.  Take a good supplement

For most of us, diet all by itself can’t meet our nutrient needs. So reach for a high-quality supplement! My top recommendations for women include: a calcium supplement, taken with magnesium, vitamin D3, omega-3 and vitex (i.e. chasteberry) for hormone balance specifically. A good B-complex, as well as black cohosh, both help with hot flashes. One supplement that combines many of my favorites is Asensia, whose formula was proven through scientific studies to help women get their hormones, such as progesterone and estrogen, back into balance.

3.  Move (or don’t move) your body

Your hormones respond to both exercise and meditation. Each activity give your hard-working adrenals a break, and reduce the amount of stress-induced cortisol flowing through your system. As we all know by now, stress leads to inflammation, burdens our immune system, and takes a toll on just about every area of your body. But yoga, a walk in nature, and quiet breathing all help counteract these effects, and create the conditions for a healthy body and calmer spirit.

Food For Thought. A MUST read guest post from Sophie Chiche of Shape House

February 26, 2015

Sophie Chiche of Shape House is a goddess. I love reading her blog and posts and updates, not to mention, Shape House is a place of worship for me. I have been lucky enough to actually sit down and get into some deep talks with this amazing woman. I just flipped over this latest post – and had to share.

sophie

A few years ago, I found myself in front of my stack of vitamins. It was the right time to take them. I had the water to take them. It made me feel really better to take them. And I looked at them. And looked some more. And I walked away. I didn’t take them. The second I was out of the kitchen, the awareness hit me instantly. I didn’t want to feel better. There was a force pulling me away from feeling my best. There was some unknown payoff I was getting from keeping myself from feeling too good.

It reminded me, years ago, at the height of my weight (320 pounds) I was asked a question by my nutritionist-psychologist that changed my entire paradigm and understanding of life and most importantly of myself. He asked: “quel benefice recois-tu en restant grosse?” because it happened in my native Paris. “what value was I getting from staying fat?” I about fell off my chair. “No value” was my initial response. “Wait a minute” he said, “we don’t do anything, unless we get some value out of it. Unconscious, maybe. But we wouldn’t do it if we were not getting something out of it. “Human nature” he said.

That was some food for thought, to say the least. Are you meaning to tell me that this enormous-unhealthy-unable to fit in any clothes-source of so much pain- body was giving me enough value that I was choosing to stay like that?

That was such a novel idea. Not taking my vitamins was the same thing. There was some secret reason I wanted to keep my life at a lesser level of happiness and wellbeing. I was getting a lot of mileage out of that. I searched deep in my soul for both these answers. And all the ones in that category. Being married to someone I was not thriving with. Not meditating, knowing full well that it would give me a lesser good day. Sabotaging every relationship that was uplifting and keeping the ones that asked less of me. Stressing from being late when I had an appointment. Eating the kind of foods that zapped my energy and made me want to stay in bed for the day. Keeping a job that didn’t make my heart sing. Not sleeping enough to be able to have a big life.

Small things. Big things.

I was doing it everywhere. I was limiting my quotient for happy, healthy and energetic. I was making choices to keep me down. To keep me in a life that is only “that” good. I still do it. Less and less. I’ve learned to recognize I am doing it and I have built tricks to help me “catch and release” the behaviors that are in that category.

I did it this week. I own Shape House. I sweat for free any day, any time. I have the keys and can come before hours, after hours. I can have my favorite bed, my favorite water, my favorite Tv show. I can release lactic acid and not feel any soreness after boxing. I can get a skin that people comment on. I can sleep better, think better and look better. Like a million bucks. And yet I didn’t do it. Not this week.

But I will do it today. Because now I told you. Because it’s out. If you run into me in the hallway…please help me remember. Because taking care of myself, fully, deeply, really is my deepest longing. Because when I am at my best, I have so much more to contribute. It really is worth it.

What will you do today to shift that trend, if you have some of it? What can you do right now? Drink some water? Turn off your computer and go for a walk? Call a dear friend and share your wins of the week? Take a nap? Be on time for your sweat?

A friend of mine told me years ago to take care of myself so I could take care of others better. I like that. That is worth it. I will take my vitamins and I will sweat today.

PS:  You HAVE to check out this!!

14 days. Every day. No excuses.

It doesn’t have a very creative name. We just call it the 14-day challenge. First we invited our Shape House hosts to try it. They struggled but made it. Then a few friends. They sweated it out. Some completed every one. Other’s didn’t. Couldn’t make it. And now we’re ready to invite a few guests to give it their best shot.

Are you up for it? 14 straight days of sweats. No misses. No cancels. No “the doggie ate my homework” excuses. Nope. None at all.

Here’s how it works: You schedule your sweat appointments for 14 consecutive days. You come in on-time and have your sweats. If you make it, do all 14, congratulations! You’ll feel great. You’ll be detoxed. You’ll feel healthier and your skin will glisten and glow. And you wouldn’t have paid a thing. It’s totally free!

But if you don’t it… If work gets in your way or you forgot about that party to go to or what’s-his-name finally asks you out, or really anything… well then, it’s fourteen sweats at $45 a piece. Ouch.

What do you think? Could you do it? If you want to be considered for the next challenge, email us at 14daychallenge@shapehouse.com

The boxed drink your kids will love more than juice. Drazil, the first ever organic, tea beverage for kids!

DRAZIL

Hey PARENTS!! Please tell me you don’t give your kids those toxic little boxes of fake juice! Ok, I’m just kidding- I totally do too.  But I try NOT to.  Problem is, they love them. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I try the low sugar occasionally (Trader Joes) but it only whets their palette for more.

When I heard about a smarter drink choice for kids but with just as much “fun” as boxed juice-sugar-killing-crap,  hella yes, I perked the heck up!

Drazil Kids Tea is bringing tea to kids.

Yup, it’s the first ready-to-drink herbal tea and juice blend specifically designed for children, and that box though – my kids lost their minds, first over the box, and then, they drank them so fast, I literally did not even get to sip one. Not a sip. Gone. Gone tea.

Just check out the health benefits!

Celebrity trainers Dana Perri and Kit Rich have teamed up to open their brand new fitness studio SHIFT by Dana Perri (www.shiftbydp.com) in Sherman Oaks! Let me tell ya, there is nothing like this out there. When you first look at the studio, you’re not sure what to expect. You grab a band, a small weighted ball, light weights and then make your way onto a specially designed spring floor. But once you step onto the floor, you know this class is about to take you places you’ve never been. After talking with the owners, I found out this floor is called an Olympic Spring floor that helps to decrease impact on the joints while activating the muscles more because of the unstable surface. So basically I was blasting fat, burning calories, and toning with very low impact on the body? Sold!

When you walk out of the studio, you definitely feel like something changed or should I say… SHIFTed. SHIFT is an acronym for Shaping How I Feel Today. And that makes sense because I felt AWESOME!

Perks:
Friendly Vibe
Clean and beautiful studio
Easy parking
First class is free!
20% off all packages for newcomers!
