The Effects of Stress On The Body From An Integrative Medicine Doctor

January 6, 2021

Consider the facts: most of the world’s population is under some form of stress right now. Standing between a collective standstill and a cultural revolution, no one person can predict whether we’ll ever go back to how things were, or if we even want to. It’s under these unprecedented times that our bodies are undergoing unprecedented stress.

Stress can look like different reactions. And during a pandemic, our bodies’ normal responses to stress might look a bit different. From a doctor’s perspective, stress can cause the body to constantly live in fight-or-flight mode, meaning the sympathetic nervous system goes into overdrive. This response essentially short-circuits the brain, rendering the body tense, uncomfortable, and unable to perform daily vital functions with ease. And at times when the sympathetic nervous system has finally exhausted itself, we fall into a deep period of depression and fatigue. It’s a vicious cycle that many can relate to yet few have been able to fix.

What does stress look like from the outside? For one, it can lead to weight gain thanks to the dysregulation of your adrenal glands. Another physical manifestation of stress is premature aging through a variety of different hormonal imbalances. Calling stress “the silent killer” isn’t an exaggeration. Not only can it contribute to an increased risk of heart attack (which is one of the leading causes of death in both men and women in America), but it depletes your immune system, rendering it unable to adequately protect you from outside attacks from viruses and bacteria, leaving you susceptible to a host of even more problems.

Stress can come in many forms, and one form can always lead into the next, be it physical, or environmental. By identifying what stress looks like in your own body, then you can take the first steps to thwart its negative effects and being prepared for any type of stressful situation.

Simple tools to both identify and fight stress:

When things get out of hand, try to bring your focus to your breath, even just for a few minutes. An easy way to do this by simply counting your breath for 1 minute. Then move to 5 minutes, then 10. Slowly, you can build up your practice and discover other forms of breathwork that are more advanced. This is often the saving grace for people under any sort of strain, especially in moments of high-stress.

Animal therapy is a powerful tool, and one that I am a strong proponent of. I believe that humans need more animal interaction, always. If adopting a dog or cat isn’t in your abilities, then find some friends with pets and ask to spend more time with them, or reach out to your local shelter and see if you can help walk the dogs. This is a great way to both volunteer your time and alleviate pressure—a win-win scenario!

● More time spent outdoors . Take a picnic, walk in the park, go hiking with a friend. Do anything that gets your body moving outside. It provides much-needed perspective and natural wonder. Trust me.

This is one not too many people know about: make sure you get enough B  vitamins. Checking levels of all the B vitamins is important to assess deficiencies and see where you should be focused on supplementing. By ensuring you are getting the right amount of vitamin B, you’re facilitating overall brain health which is vital to stress reduction. Do more research on the importance of B vitamins and check with your doctor to check your levels.

● Let it go. Sure, easier said than done, but once you learn to not sweat the small stuff, or even let go of a longtime grudge or issue, you’ll unlock the priceless key to living an anxiety-free life. A calm brain is a calm life.. The next time you find yourself dwelling or fuming over a situation out of your control, try repeating this matra: the things that are in the past should remain in the past. Then count your breath, and see if that doesn’t help your mood.

● Listen to more Mozart. Studies show that Mozart can help heal and sharpen the brain. The different range of frequencies helps mobilize the brain into focus and reason. Music heals, after all. I like to listen to Mozart at least once a week, even if I don’t consider myself stressed. It’s part of my mental health regimen. Find your checklist, commit to it daily or weekly, and I promise you’ll find some of the secrets to living a stress-free and happier lifestyle.

New Meditation Studio On The Block: CULTIVATE Meditation + Wellness

August 11, 2019

A gorgeous, new meditation space has opened up in the heart of Atwater Village!  CULTIVATE Meditation + Wellness is a family-run center offering a wide range of drop-in classes, healings, private sessions, and workshops. Owner Jen Stavitsky was inspired to create a facility with a strong sense of community, inclusivity, and support that serves LA’s eastside, which was lacking a dedicated meditation center.

CULTIVATE’s team of facilitators all live locally and are excited for the opportunity to serve their neighbors with daily classes that cover everything from mindfulness to Yoga Nidra to sound healings, hypnotherapy and more.

It’s a deeply serene space, with a gentle design palate inspired by the soft tones of the South Western desert. Its prismatic skylights cast soothing patterns which slowly evolve throughout the course of the day. It has a large main studio capable of accommodating up to thirty guests, and a smaller second studio designed for healings, workshops and private sessions. All in all, the space feels inviting and deeply relaxing.

While offering a wide variety of traditional meditation and wellness classes, CULTIVATE  also branches out into more playful and unique offerings, like ASMR meditations and sound healings facilitated by a classical harpist.  Their goal is to make meditation fun, interesting and accessible with a style suitable for all walks of life, including first time meditators, adventurous spirits, and those with a deep practice.

CULTIVATE Meditation + Wellness is located at 3229 Glendale Blvd, LA CA 90039. You can visit their website https://www.cultivate-online.com/ for scheduling, bookings and additional details.

Heal Your Relationship Space with – Jusstine K

June 14, 2019

I just had a reading and healing with Jusstine K or Psychic Girl as she’s been known amongst celebrities and the like for over 30 years. I read her about Jusstine on GOOP in an article titled Detox Your Heartspace (me!) and had to know more as I have been really struggling in the love department lately.

I was lucky enough to have Jusstine to my home for a personal reading. I came loaded with questions for her. She tuned in with a general about myself first and then we got into specifics. What I loved about this reading was that she didn’t tell me what I was hoping to hear. In other words, no unicorns and rainbows. It was this is not happening here or that is not happening now and rethink this and it’ll be a year before that….

I am for sure in an interesting place! All during the reading, she kept saying, I know this probably isn’t what you want to hear, somewhat apologetically and always with the notion, but we have free will, life intervenes and these are messages she is getting from my guides. Thing is, things can change.

Ok, this all sounds really sad but really it wasn’t at all. We got clarity around my budding business. Jusstine clearly reflected back exactly what was going on with me in my partnership/romance/love/relationships world and the good news is, she has found a way to share healing in this space with everyone by creating a download that is nowhere near her session fee. Phew.

Heal Your Relationship

Effortless Way to Heal Broken Hearts

“After two decades of studying and researching in the physical, metaphysical and spiritual realms, I was inspired to create what I believe is the most powerful relationship tool there is. Heal Your Relationship Space instantly heals your heart and shifts the energy around relationships. It gets you out of emotional pain with just one listen, and then continues to heal you the more you do it!”

– Jusstine K.

Jusstine took me through a healing – one on one – and it was so relaxing from the start that I was immediately open to go deep into the visualization journey with her.

And I am soooo excited about this download because it’s so cheap you don’t even need a discount code or anything – it’s $25!!

“That’s the beautiful thing about my meditation to clear your emotional space: It’s a cheat sheet to healing heartache. It’s like taking a shower from the inside out, so you are ready to attract what’s best for you.” – Jusstine on Goop.

Ok somehow I just copied and pasted this button from her site – so wow – you can just click this big pink button below!

“Heal Your Relationship Space is a 15 minute MP3 download. All you do is close your eyes, listen and you will heal. Since everything on the outside of you is a reflection of what’s happening on the inside, as you heal yourself spiritually the physical naturally follows. Just imagine being able to wash away every traumatic relationship experience that has made you who you are today. Heal Your Relationship Space does just that! It is like giving your spirit a shower from the inside out.”

6 Simple Steps to Defusing Emotional Pain by Dr. Scott Symington

June 6, 2019

by Dr. Scott Symington

Emotional pain is built into the fabric of life. It shows up in multiple forms: anxiety, loneliness, feeling rejected, overwhelmed by the stresses of life and the list goes on. In the midst of these challenging experiences, we naturally look for ways to change the way we’re feeling—to alleviate the pain.

If we don’t have healthy ways of coping with emotional distress, we’re susceptible to relying on things like food, alcohol, shopping and Internet surfing to get the soothing and relief we seek.

To protect your wellbeing, it’s important to be equipped with tools and a game plan to address the challenging emotional experiences that show up in life.

Here are 6 steps to diffusing intense emotional symptoms:

Step 1 Take a deep breath, relax your muscles, and feel your feet on the ground.

Step 2 Remind yourself that thoughts and feelings come and go like a weather pattern passing through: I won’t always feel this way.

Step 3 Instead of fighting what you’re feeling, move into emotional acceptance, allowing the painful feeling to breathe. Say to yourself, I can live with this feeling right now.

Step 4 Describe out-loud or on paper what you’re feeling and the thoughts you’re having, almost as if you were taking on the role of an impartial commentator. Label the emotions and describe where and how you feel them in your body.

Step 5 Engage in a five-minute grounding exercise. First, listen to all the sounds in your environment intently for 1 to 2 minutes. Then pick out a visual anchor in your environment, something pleasing to the eye, such as a painting or picture, and study it visually for a couple of minutes. Next notice how your body feels on the cushion or chair or run your hand under warm water noticing the sensations (1 to 2 minutes). Lastly, grab a spice or something that has a pleasing aroma and engage your olfactory sense. Study the smell for a minute or so. This process of grounding is highly effective in both bringing awareness into the present moment, which is incompatible with internal spinning, and decreasing emotional intensity.

Step 6: Engage in meaningful action. Instead of turning inward and focusing on how you’re feeling, place your attention and concern on someone else. Engage in an act of kindness or if you pray, pray for someone you know is struggling. Take some action that reflects the best part of who you are.

Next time you find yourself emotionally overwhelmed or in a painful feeling state, implement the 6 steps you just reviewed. Especially with time and practice, you will notice that this approach reduces the power and presence of emotional pain in your life. You can’t always avoid the emotional challenges that come your way but you can develop a set of responses that protect your wellbeing and keep you fully engaged and present with life. Give it a try!

Sound Alchemy With La Mer at La Maida Institute

June 21, 2018

LOVE LA MER

I fell in love with La Mer during an internet stalk on sound healers in LA. I had to meet her ASAP and did so at the La Maida Institute where she is the Sound & Song Healing Advisor. La Mer took me into a deep, hypnotic trance state, deep theta – with her instrumental alchemy and soothing angelic voice. My one on one session was nothing short of breath-taking. I am for sure going to have her work her magic on a small private group. Here is more about Meredith. I urge you to check out one of her offerings at the stunning La Maida or to book her privately.

Here’s a little interview to learn more about her!

GLA: Do you remember first connecting to sound alchemy and what did you do once you realized it was a portal to healing?

Like most music lovers who grew up singing and playing, I have always felt tapped into music’s capacity to connect, heal and transform.  I became more keenly aware of this while studying Ewe drum and dance in Ghana during my second year of college.  Working directly with a community whose connection to the pulse of life is literally woven into everyone’s daily rhythm was life altering.  Music has always been the foundation of their lives… babies come out of the womb knowing how to play rhythms of their tribes, it’s in their DNA!  This experience helped me realize how much has been lost in our mind centered culture and inspired me to reclaim rhythm within my own ancestral lineage.   It also helped me acknowledge how integral rhythm and resonance is and always has been to the health and well being of ourselves, communities, and the world.   Furthermore, my studies in the yoga arts and Ayurveda (the science of life) brought depth to my understanding of how to attune with nature’s rhythm in all kinds of ways.  All this and more has directed of my path as music maker, performer and healing artist.  It is also the seed inspiration of my current approach to sound alchemy which bridges ancestral wisdom with the evolving science of sound.

GLA: Do you have any mentors or teachers who ushered you to the work and nurtured your growth as a sound alchemist?

SO many!  Jennifer Goodrich, Jim Gilchrist, Bill Headberg, Shiva Rea, Maria Guerre, Silvia Nakkach, Sally Kempton, Susan Maine, Matica Filous, Guro Jess, Guro El, all my ancestors alive in body and spirit..

GLA: This is such esoteric (yet vitally important work!) Did you ever doubt that you could make a living like this? Did you question it as a profession or simply trusted it?

Trusting the path of integration is my practice.  I have never once had a regular ‘job’, I have just always tried my best follow my gut and heart and it has lead me to this work.   It’s a challenge to create your own lane in the highway, but many succeed at it and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Simply trusting it is over simplifying though… I have moments of doubt and confusion…who willing to dive deeply into the human experience doesn’t?  But no doubt strong enough to veer me off the path of integration I am committed to.

GLA: What was the most challenging experience using this modality?

Transporting/loading/unloading/loading instruments/gear:)

GLA: Do you ever find yourself getting stuck or lost or scared that your channel might be blocked?

If I am lost or stuck or scared it’s because I haven’t taken the space or time to connect to the Source of Love that is ALL WAYS there when we take the time to nurture it.  I believe the channel is there for anyone who is willing to consciously, reverently lovingly relate with it.

La Maida Institute

GLA: Do you receive healings when you are in session and service for someone else? I imagine so!

Yes!  Not in the same way as those who I am holding space for, yet I most definitely receive healing.

GLA: Was there ever a moment in a session where you felt something divine happening but thought ‘oh I need to stop this!’ – because it was too intense?

My essence thrives on intensity so I have always been able to work with and through strong sensations, however holding safe space for others is integral to the process of wholesome attunement.  Checking in with participants and creating space for clear communication around the experience is often necessary.  That being said, sometimes the work requires intensity and discomfort.  Most people who find me have a willingness to dive into the  experience, come what may.   Together we cultivate deep sensitivity and respect for the process of organic unfolding through rhythm and resonance.

GLA: Where do you see yourself in a few years with this work? Can you imagine opening sound alchemy centers? Bringing it to school children?

I am currently developing a course and training that will be offered at La Maida Institute, where I am Sound & Song Healing Advisor.  That is the next phase of this work.  I am also working on more recording projects and soundscapes.  I actually work with pre-teens and teenagers now and really enjoy it.  Yes, I would love to integrate the work into schools.

GLA: How do you practice self care and nurture YOURSELF after a session?

I have some simple rituals for clearing after a session.  I take time for silence and prayer.  I often work with tarot and Goddess decks.   I walk my dog if I do a home session.  I have learned to not over book myself; this is necessary for self care.

GLA: Who are some of your favorite people in LA for healings, classes, workouts, etc…What are your little secret spots that bring you joy. A favorite walk, stretch of beach, taco or hole in the wall book store. Your LA comfort zones.

La Maida Institute, where I offer monthly new moon sound ceremonies,  weekly nada yoga classes (yoga of sound) and one on one sound alchemy sessions is my favorite place in LA… truly!  It is an AMAZING community center with so much to offer.  I feel privileged to be part of the evolution taking place there.   My favorite indie yoga studio/class/teacher is Light on Lotus~  Sunday morning Love Saves the Day class with Kate Cariarti… amazing dynamic, playful flow.  The proceeds go to a different charity each month…and you get to step out of class into the Mar Vista Farmers Market…best way to spend a Sunday!  Favorite beach is by Heathercliff by Malibu, favorite little valley spot is Follow Your Heart on Sherman Way.  I also train MMA (mixed martial arts) at Magda Institute in the valley.  This has been a game changer in so many ways, but that’s a whole other conversation for another interview! I highly recommend it for anyone who is burnt out on the health and wellness ‘scene’ and interested in some hard core bad ass training in the lineage of Bruce Lee:)

La Mer offers : One on one sessions, couple and small group ceremonies, corporate wellness sound alchemy sessions, , monthly new moon sound ceremonies, training programs and more.
Her next new moon sound ceremony at La Maida Institute is July 12

Heavenly sounds and instruments…
The aftermath…
Total bliss…

FullSizeRender (27).jpg

I am a healer, songstress, and wildwoman storyteller from Los Angeles Earth. My contribution centers around powerful rituals of union with soulful nature. Through workshops, sound bath, healing circle, artistic happenings and individual sessions, I empower people to navigate their lives with graceful integrity, holding sacred space for transformation at the heart of every offering.

Drawing from 11 years of experience in the healing arts, I honor the philosophies of our wise traditions while utilizing these very teachings to sensitively and playfully engage in a genuine call and response with my surroundings.

I spent the first part of my career as a touring and performance artist.  This taught me the way of communicating with others through artistic expression.  I further developed my style as an inspirational speaker teaching yoga and meditation in studios, public schools, and wellness centers in NYC and Los Angeles.  I now explore the bridge between ritual and performance art,  guiding group experiences that strengthen collective intuition and embody conscious community. Aside from the healing arts, I support ocean conservation with beach clean ups, marine conservation watches, and generate awareness as advocate for Mission Blue and public speaker for Heal The Bay. My deepest desire is to be in a practice of continual growth, cherish nature’s movements as proof of magic, and to share the love with all my relations. xo

Upcoming public gatherings are always listed on this events page.
