EYELASH EXTENSIONS – MINK! – WITH SANDI SCHROEDER ($50 OFF FOR GROOMED L.A. READERS!!)

March 12, 2010

If you don't already know now then you need to know now that SANDI SCHROEDER is the go-to-girl for lash extensions in town. I've been going to her since 2007 when what I thought was a one-time-job for some head shots, turned into a monthly habit I will not, cannot and refuse to give up now matter what the economy.  They pay off of gorgeous, thick black lashes the moment you wake up, a no-smudge, no eye-make-up scenario is just too worth it for me. I've always had those eyes that even if I wear waterproof mascara, I am a raccoon with minutes and constantly wiping and smearing and futzing with my eyes all day. Extensions leave me care-free and with my big eyes, and naturally unimpressive lashes, it just makes such a huge difference on my face. Huge!

So when Sandi mentioned she was now working with mink, I initially balked. The thought of any little minkies being harmed for my lash habit made me shudder at the thought of just how far peeps will go to look good (killing little animals?  oh no!)  So Sandi informed me they are totally cruelty-free, the minks are not killed but gently brushed and there is absolutely no animal harm endured.  Well ok then, I'd give it a shot and see what the diff is!

Why try?  First of all they are hypo-allergenic and totally natural.  So if you are super sensitive this option might appeal to you. Because they are so softie, they're beyond comfy, totally weightless – you don't feel then AT ALL – and they don't have that poky feeling the synthetics can have when they get a little wonky over time. They last longer than the regular synthetic extensions and take on the body of your own natural lashes.  They also come in curly or regular curl.

I gotta say, wow, they are really niiiceee….I can definitely feel the difference in weight. I feel absolutely nothing and I do sense the synthetics from time to time.  I think I'll continue with these for a while, unless the price becomes an issue but I can already sense, a new addiction coming on.  Oh no!

Love you, Sandi xox

THE GO TO BROW GAL – TONYA CROOKS

I've been hearing a ton about eyebrow waxer extraordinaire TONYA CROOKS and was finally able to nail her down for an appointment. Not easy!  Her adorable new studio, all black and red boudoir glam is conveniently located in the same cute little courtyard as lash guru SANDI SHROEDER so if you're up for it, you could schedule an over-all eye make-over in an afternoon. Fun!

Tonya means business.  She had me in her shiny black chaise within a moment of meeting me and got to work muy pronto.  She took a pencil and drew in my brows to create a blueprint for what would be my job – NOT TOUCHING THEM – until they grew in to her specifications.  One was thinner than the other, one arch was mishapped, the were spotty in, well, spots…in other words they were a mess (I had no idea!). I have a ton of growing to do before I too can embrace my true inner Megan Foxiness. Her wax is light, her hand quick and the whole ten minute job was totally painless.  My brows looked fab when she was done but since mine are all about the growth that I don't have, I feel like I have a few sessions with Tonya before I can really reap the full on benefits of her brilliance. Obviously, I'm hiding my tweezers until then.

Tonya's was trained as an artist first, then moved into make-up, studying at the Make Up Forever school in Paris – and then from San Fran to L.A. where she cut her beauty teeth even more doing editorial, fashion, runway, special effects, etc.  She also waxes all facial hair, btw, so if there are a few stray hairs here and there, she'll nab them for you.

And, speaking of Megan Fox, Tonya also does Fergie, Molly Sims, Gwyneth Paltrow, Britney Spears, America Ferrera, Eva Mendez, Vanessa Marcil, Chelsea Handler, Krista Allen, and Lance Bass.

CHRIS PIERCE at ANDY LeCOMPTE SALON FOR SUPREME-FAB COLOR.

February 23, 2010

I have found the only and I mean ONLY other person (besides my beloved and brilliant Danny Hernandez) whom I will ever trust my color to, who get's it, know's fashion, what's hot and knows exactly how to make your hair look brilliant from one simple look at you: That is the genius, CHRISTOPHER PIERCE.

And he can be found at the uber-chic-I'm-totally-obsessed-with it- ANDY LeCOMPTE SALON.

I won't get into the details of the bleak color situation I was in that brought me to him last week, but let's just say,  not only did he resuscitate my hair back to life, took things to a whole new level of supreme goddess greatness.

WIth over 25 years in the biz, and one of the busiest chairs in the biz, Chris is known for his Baliage highlighting technique, richly colored darker hues, fabulous shades of vibrant red and a passion for color correction (Amen!) …He turned what had become an overly-processed-brassy-orange-grey-overly-foil-highlighted mess and turned it into yummy, warm, sexy, young, natural looking caramel, gold and honey, deliciousness – the kind you seriously only see in magazines after it's been photo-shopped.  He's a color master.  Very few of these guys around and Chris Pierce is the real deal.

DRYBAR – L.A.’S 1st BLOW DRY/ BLOW OUT “BAR”

February 22, 2010

HOW COOL IS THIS?!

DRYBAR

Totally genius idea.  Booked my first appointment and cannot wait. Letcha’ know how it goes.  Looks awesome.  A super cool blow dry for $35?  Brilliant.

LA’s first “blow dry bar” has a very simple concept: No cuts. No color. Just blowouts. $35
drybar was created when co-founder Alli Webb outgrew her “one woman” mobile show.  After moving to LA, she began doing at-home blowouts on the side, but the strictly referral-based business quickly exploded.  Webb says” I realized that women wanted a better blowout, a better experience, and a better price – especially in this economy.”  After a year of planning and development, the drybar concept was born!  The idea is centered around a bar experience as opposed to a typical “hair salon” environment.  The main “blow out bar”  is the focal point of the space and where women will sip their cocktail and watch Sex and the City while getting a blow out!  Whether you want the Manhattan (sleek and smooth hair) or the Mai Tai (messy, beach hair), there is something for everyone.

Check out these pix.  Gorgeous space!
