Meet Contributing Editor Tara Sizlo – She’s got Westside fitness covered for you!

October 4, 2010

Tara Sizlo is a former personal trainer to the stars and LA’s fit Westside royalty. Certified through the American College of Sports Medicine, Tara has contributed to numerous exercise videos, has written fitness articles for magazines like Seventeen, and every so often continues to moonlight as a guest instructor at posh destination spas like Mexico’s Rancho La Puerta. Jealous!

Now a full time mom living in the Pacific Palisades, Tara stays fit and fabulous by chasing her two boys around the Westside, running the Santa Monica stairs, and squeezing in – her latest obsession — boot camp on the beach.

Devoted to her kids’ busy schedules, Tara has swapped her monthly scrubs at L.A.’s Korean bath houses (or the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, for that matter) for the more convenient local spas of Brentwood, Santa Monica, Venice, Pali and Malibu. She will however travel for a great facial or killer yoga class.

In her own words…

On skin: “I love going in for a facial tune up, but tend to be a bit of a minimalist when it come to skincare products. Who has time for a 12 step program? All I need are a few key products to tide me over to my next appointment. Right now I adore my new Lift micro-dermabrasion facial scrub by md aesthetics, which leaves my skin fresh and smooth. And I am always on the lookout for a great face moisturizer, especially one with SPF to protect me from that (sometimes hazy) Santa Monica sunshine.”

On Make-up: “I love being a girl, and the one area I love to play with most is make-up. The eye shadow at the top of my drawer right now is Rockstar, by Bobbie Brown. It is a gorgeous pale blue metallic shimmer (I know what your thinking, but this eye shadow is nothing like the kind your granny used to wear). Highlighted with BB’s Cobalt Ink Gel Eyeliner with a good mascara and I am ready for a night out with the girls.”

On fitness: “I can’t get enough of my new boot camp class on the beach. Nothing beats the sand between your toes and dolphins on the horizon to distract you from the thought of doing that final set of tush toning squats. I will never pass up a chance to take a hip hop class. And I am always in search of the perfect yoga facility. I prefer ‘Pedicured Yoga’, where the toes are polished, the towels are fresh, the mats are clean and your neighbor doesn’t reek of patchouli — not that I’m afraid of a little patchouli, but I do have an aversion to athlete’s foot.”

On food: “I am obsessed with finding tasty food delivery that can save me from the mac n’ cheese and chicken tenders that call to me from my kid’s plates. There must be one great delivery service out there that can help me keep my calories down, while tempting my gourmet taste buds.”

On fashion: “I’m a bit of a simple girl. All I need are the staples… a great pair of jeans, some strappy sandals and a fabulous bag. Of course a girl does need her accessories. I’m a huge Me&Ro fan. I love the hammered gold pieces that my true love has given me. There’s something about Me&Ro’s delicious tone of yellow gold and how it complements my now fading summer tan. Really can a girl ask for anything more?… Oh all right maybe just a little more.”

Kalologie Studio City

September 22, 2010

For me, getting a facial – I mean a real deep-cleansing facial, not just a pampering massage — is like heading to the dentist. I know it’s good for me. I know I’m overdue. I know I will emerge from this experience a cleaner, happier, brighter version of myself, but the thought all those painful extractions under that bright squeaky light (just like the one at the dentist!!) absolutely terrifies me!

Until now.

Last week I went in for my first facial in ages, and was absolutely bowled over. This time – you read it hear – no rough sloughing, no painful poking, no burning peels, just good products, a gentle hand, and immediately visible results.

I booked a Deluxe Kalologie Facial with Jamie Fishman at Kalologie Studio City. Named one of America’s Top 10 skin care clinics by Elle Magazine, Kalologie is a one-stop-shop for effective skincare products and treatments by an educated medical staff. Kalologie offers everything from facials and waxing to Botox, Restylane and much, much more. Celebrity clients include Eva Longoria, Victoria Beckham, Sophia Bush, Rebecca Gayheart and Usher. Alright already!

After assessing my skin, Jamie used a series of Kalologie Labs cleansers, exfoliants and masks, followed by a customized peel. Despite my fears, she squeezed in (forgive the pun) a few extractions but her touch was so gentle I barely noticed. It was a high-performance, deep-cleansing, face-brightening 75 minutes. Powerful? You bet. Painful? No way. My face glowed, my skin felt younger, and I walked out of there with a big bag of Kalologie Labs products and an appointment for I.P.L next month.

Jamie works her magic at both the Robertson and Studio City locations and, trust me, she is amazing. If only she did teeth cleanings…

Dr. Alkaitis Holistic Organic Skin Food and Petite Spa in Santa Monica for their facials – Michelle Ray reports

September 19, 2010

DR. ALKAITIS / HOLISTIC ORGANIC SKIN FOOD

Recommended, especially for those who prefer holistic skin care: Dr. Alkaitis’s “Results Oriented Holistic Organic Skin Treatments.” This line is unique in that all his creations are edible, easily absorbed by the skin and designed to bring the skin into perfect balance.

The products are especially suited to those with dry, mature or problem skin, or with chemical sensitivities. Dr. Alkaitis philosophy: the root of beauty is health. So this line is crafted with meticulous attention to the safety, purity and quality of all ingredients. The ingredients used are organic or wild crafted, and all chosen carefully to promote clear, vibrant and younger looking skin.

Santa Monica’s Petite Spa was the perfect setting to experience these beautiful products.

Aesthetician Juliana was gentle, attentive to my skin personal concerns and well versed on the benefits of the products. The Organic Purifying Facial Cleanser (4 oz. $55) , with a castile base, smelled and felt wonderful on my face. The Toner contains a blend of organic herbs and essential oils which makes you feel like you’re in a field of wildflowers, intoxicating but earthy as well.

I also had the Enzyme Exfoliating Mask (4 oz. $45 – 25 masks), which is excellent for cleansing and anti aging. While the mask did its work I had a body melting neck, shoulder and arm massage, the perfect end to a long week on the computer.
There are actually several mask options based on your skin needs, and they can be done in sequence if desired. All masks are biologically active and feed the skin. They are mixed with water or for optimal benefit, goats milk.

My skin felt incredibly smooth after the treatment, and best of all my skin was rosy, bright and clear. Pores? Invisible. Several days later I’m still enjoying my glow.

Let the VI PEELING begin!

September 10, 2010

Yay! I finally got around to my long awaited VI PEEL.  But wait here's the best part! I was given my peel by Mr. VI PEEL himself, Dr. Kalil, the doctor who invented it!

He was awesome and it was actually a blast – if you can call putting acid on your face a blast (uh, I can!) – because he took the opportunity to demonstrate how it's administered to some peeps in the offices here in Santa Monica. I got to learn about it from the inside and it really is a superior peel. It took just a few minutes and I was back in my car with what looked like a fresh little sunburn in no time.

VI PEEL has become infamous for it's minimal downtime and low-level ouch factor (felt fine! great even!) while revealing dramatic results in just a few days.  In about a week I should be shiny brand new, refreshed and revitalized with a bit less melasma, brown spots and unevenness.  Hooray!

Dare I post a pic of my post peel face to get this before and after thing going?

I tried, I did!  But I just can't handle posting pics of myself up here. I'm just not as brave as the mother of us all, Madame Nadine Jolie.

But here, you can check out beauty blogger to the Gods Nadine Jolie posting her progress here!

Nadine:

It’s been three days since I had my Vi Peel, and the phenol acid, vitamin C and Retin-A peel is working wonders…if by “wonders” I were to actually mean “is causing every last ounce of my skin to kamikaze dive off my face in unattractive, flaky sheets.”  Pictures of the disgusting-yet-effective madness to follow shortly!

I hope to get the courage like her to post my before and afters for you too, for now let Nadine inspire you!
