Keratin Rejuvenation Treatment with Denis De Souza at Andy LeCompte

May 17, 2011

Keratin 1

I had a major hair tragedy two weeks ago.  I was invited to get a fancy pants haircut at a new uber chic salon, and let's just say that one thing led to another, and I was given a Brazilian Blowout that burnt my hair. As in Fried.  Fucked.  Done.

Anyway, I immediately took what was left of my hair and ran to my hair worship goddess Liz Devin at Andy LeCompte Salon.  Not only is she a Brazilian Blowout expert but she has been giving me the most sexy, soft, elegant, sexy (did I say that?!) haircuts for the past few years.  The only two times I farmed myself out to try another stylist for Groomed LA (only… I would never let any one else touch it if it weren't for journalistic reasons!) – I was back in Liz's chair the next day for her to fix it.

And now, here I was, my once long and sexy waves now looking like Joan Jet.  Liz took my fried asymmetrical tresses in her fingers and said, it's burnt.  She tried to save what was left by trimming off the parts that looked like electrocuted and did the best to shape my stiff fried helmet.  "This ones gonna take a long time to go out.  Sorry.  And your hair was looking gorgeous!"  The tears turned to fury.  "How long?" I pleaded.  "A long time" is all she said, and she traipsed off in a puff of gorgousness and 9 feet long legginess.  She soon returned with Denis.  "Denis will fix it. You need a Rejuvenating Keratin Treatment. Stat. It's what I make people do if their hair is too damaged for a Brazilian.  And buy a silk pillowcase. " Pencil me in. ASAP!

I kept my hair in an oily ponytail all week until I could get in to see Denis DeSouza, drenching it in serum to keep it from breaking. Turns out that's a huge mistake.  Denis said no, no, no! Silicone in the serums dry it out even more!

Thank GOD for Denis (his main thing is as colorist there) – and his amazing treatment that SAVED MY HAIR!!  My burnt hair is now soft again and manageable. It doesn't look dead. It's come to life. The treatment uses 8 bottles of Keratin and Collagen (4 each) They are sprayed, in turns,  onto the hair, and worked deep into the layers of the hair with a lo-set flat iron.

This treatment is perfection for someone who's hair goes through a lot of processing, coloring, sun, a burnt Brazilian, or hair that is just super dry and needs major repair.

Here are some more deets:

THINK: Locked-in hair repair.

WHAT IT IS: A replenishing, rejuvenating new treatment for distressed tresses.

WHAT IT DOES: Restores Keratin, one of the building blocks of hair, to worn-out locks. Hair is composed of overlapping layers of cuticles that progressively deteriorate with continued exposure to harsh ingredients. When hair is exposed to any chemical—from straightening formulas to coloring systems—the cuticle is the most vulnerable. A damaged cuticle compromises hair’s natural barrier: it lets out vital nutrients and invites in dryness and split ends. When hair lacks elasticity and strength, Keratin can be added to repair damaged areas and rebuild internal structures.

HOW IT DOES IT: Denis De Souza’s state-of-the-art Keratin Rejuvenation Treatment applications come in three different molecular weights, each a special building block of the hair:

CMC—When hair becomes weakened and dehydrated, it loses CMC, an oil-based ingredient in the hair. Adding CMC enables dehydrated and distressed hair to retain moisture and lock in the necessary Keratin.

Collagen—In the same way it adds strength and elasticity to skin cells, Collagen pumps up hair by creating a veil on the cuticle’s surface that locks in moisture, adds softness, and deters frizz.

Silk Proteins and Aloe Extract—These gentle ingredients join Collagen in forming an even veil of protection on the hair’s cuticle, adding shine and resistance. Silk Proteins and Aloe Extract also protect the hair from daily stresses like thermal styling, UV light and brush friction.

THE PROCESS: The luxurious deep conditioning treatment provides immediate long-lasting results. In just 30-45 minutes (depending on hair length), the Keratin Rejuvenation Treatment strengthens the hair at the cortex, fosters softer hair, and seals in moisture to retain all the beneficial effects of the Keratin System.

You lock in the results with an at home take-home supply kit, extending the effects of the treatment until the next salon visit.

WHO HAS HAD IT (and loved it): Charlize Theron, Michelle Monaghan, Kelly Preston, Kate Walsh to name a few…

Inspector Gadget of the Week! LightStim – LED Light Therapy for Anti-aging, Acne and Rosacea.

LIGHTSTIM – LED LIGHT THERAPY LIGHT FOR WRINKLES & ACNE

Not everyone can afford to go for high end cutting edge laser treatments to deal with wrinkles, acne, enlarged pores, rosacea, sun damage, etc…  So the question is, is it worth it to invest in one of the latest, cutting edge HOME systems to attempt to fight the battle of persistent skin issues on the home front?  And, does a $300 investment assure that these products will do the trick? Well, let's find out!  I'm testing out a bunch of these systems for you guys, and while it's tricky to ascertain results in the short period of time that I've been using them ( results claim to appear after several weeks and I'm on week 3) I wanted to start tracking my progress now for you.

I was very intrigued by LIGHSTIM, as many facials now incorporate LED light into them.  Here's how it claims to work in the simplest form for easy digestion! ( Links to more scientific data here).

LED :: LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Diodes give off energy in the form of light. These little diodes are compact, durable, powerful, bright, efficient, and when used in combination with LightStim’s patent pending engineering, produce rejuvenating effects on the skin.

Light Therapy is the use of specific types of light which give off energy that stimulates your cells, thereby increasing the production of collagen and elastin. In turn, this makes your skin firmer, less wrinkled, and younger looking. This is known as LED Light Therapy.

THOUGHTS :: I've been using the red bulbed LightStim (anti-aging, obviously) for a few minutes every day – it says go for THREE minutes in each spot on the face you want to treat for FIVE days a week.   Since it needs to be plugged in (the LED takes too much power for a battery), I am doing it at my desk, often with one hand, while reading email or attempting to type. This is probably not the best way to do it as I can't really hold it in place. I wish I didn't have to plug it in so I could do it while watching TV.  Only thing is, I never watch TV. So, I suppose desk time is best after all.  The light is extremely bright (it comes with tiny goggles if you're so inclined – me – too lazy) but if you press it against your skin tight enough, it won't blind you. Kidding. It's just very strong. Which is what you want.  You don't feel anything, it doesn't even warm up.  It's easy to use – you don't need to prep with any creams, gels, etc.  It's just about finding the right spot on your face and having the patience to hold it still(ish) for three minutes.  Being of the ADD crew, I just want to MOVE IT AROUND, like a Quigi board mouse, before the time is up.  I have no idea why.  It's simple to do on the cheeks, as they are nice and chusion-y and the handle just sort of finds it's place there. A bit more challenging on the forehead where I feel bony and the light does emit into the room as it's not totally covered by skin.  You ARE supposed to close the eye that's closest to the light, btw, when you use it on your cheeks.

So far, after only three weeks, it's hard to say what's happening.  This is probably because I am not doing it religiously, which I always think is something to take note of.  You want something that is east to commit to.  And while this device is super easy, painless and even fun, it might just be that I'm too busy to really focus!  I do know that my skin is looking quite good and hydrated. My fine lines have been diminishing as of late and I am more than certain that my recent Ultherapy had a quantitative effect – my collagen is continuing to rebuild at the moment.

IS IT WORTH IT? :: If you are in the market for something, ANYTHING that you can do at home that can possibly be beneficial for anti-aging and skin management, I say invest in a LightStim and the NuFace Toning System (more on that tomorrow). It's a bit of an investment, but these both were recommended to me by top aestheticians who use them in their practice. And I have to think, if they are going to bother putting their names on the line, then it has to be worth something.  I do think a big part of it, is diligence and dedication.  There is data to prove these devices take effect – so if you have the cash for this but not the thousands to do a more intensive doctor assisted treatment, I say go fo it.  Heck, if you think it's crap, sell it on Craigslist!

How the Acne Light Works

LED blue light therapy helps to kill the acne causing bacteria, reduce inflammation and provide a general rejuvenation effect on the skin.

Acne begins when the pores become clogged or blocked and bacteria starts to grow, resulting in whiteheads and blackheads. The whitehead or blackhead releases its contents onto the surface of the skin and either heals or, it can rupture and inflammatory acne can take place.

How the Acne Skincare Light Works

The combination of blue, red and infrared lights in the LightStim Acne Light get down to the core of the acne causing bacteria. The red lights help to reduce inflammation while at the same time, the blue lights help to kill the acne causing bacteria.

LightStim's technology was developed by a doctor and a scientist. We at LightStim care about health and beautiful skin. Feel free to call or email us with any questions you might have.

Secrets of a Top Skin Doctor

You wouldn’t take advice from a pudgy personal trainer, a chain-smoking doctor… and certainly not a wrinkly dermatologist. Women’s Health contributor, Francesca Fusco practices what she preaches. Here, she gives you your ticket to a beautiful complexion and gorgeous, glowing skin.

Use SPF powder
Every day, dust a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen powder over your regular SPF day lotion and makeup to deflect light, making your skin look flawless, and adding an even stronger protective layer; it’s also handy for controlling midday shine in oily skin types. (HAD NO IDEA!)

Switch up your retinol
If you use only one anti-aging product, make it topical vitamin A, which unclogs pores, prevents the buildup of dead skin cells, diminishes lines, lightens dark spots, and makes skin glow. Apply a pea-size amount of the cream to your face every night.  (OOPS, DON'T EVEN USE IT!)

Go easy on injectables
Muscle freezers, like Botox, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it’s important not to go overboard. Baby Botox is a smaller amount which is administered more frequently and you won’t end up looking frozen or balloon-faced. (ANOTHER NEWS FLASH)

Stop yo-yo dieting!
Rapid gains and losses of 10 or more pounds stretch the skin, making it slower to bounce back, so preserve your face by maintaining a healthy weight.  (DOES 3 TO 5 POUNDS COUNT?)

Use a modern exfoliating brush
The Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System has instant smoothing and a deep-cleansing ability, which is great for everyone—even acne prone individuals. Its sonic-wave technology decongests pores and allows your cleanser and topic products to dig even deeper. (ME LOVES MY CLARISONIC! TRY THE OPAL FOR EYES!!)

Perk up your eyes with caffeine
Dark-circle products that contain vitamin K or caffeine (both of which simulate blood flow to prevent pooling around the eyes) are effective if you use them every day. You can also pop the product in the fridge—cold temperatures constrict blood vessels and make puffiness go down.  (HOW ABOUT JUST DRINKING 6 CUPS OF COFFEE A DAY? I ALREADY DO THAT!)

Has your regular trip to the nail salon lost that lovin’ spa feeling?  Ready to treat your tootsies to the pampering that they deserve?  Well slide those neglected stems into your favorite spring sandals and get ready, because the Nail Garden has arrived in the Westside.

The already infamous Nail Garden, with branches in Studio City, Sherman Oaks and Burbank, has just opened its newest nail salon, conveniently located in the Brentwood Gardens. It’s the perfect spot for a spa trip before meeting the girls for a quick bite or shopping for the right top at Ron Herman to match your fabulous new nail color.

The Nail Garden’s modern decor and chill lounge music gives the nail salon a relaxingly fresh vibe. Combined with complementary coffee and drinks, I was feeling pampered even before I picked out my nail color.  And best of all, to my surprise, the nail polish station was completely filled with every OPI color imaginable. I easily found my favorite sultry red, named “Vodka and Caviar.”  Yum!

The Nail Garden has lots of different reasonably priced spa packages available, or clients can pick and choose treatments to design their own spa experience. I treated my neglected digits to the Indulgence Bliss Spa Combo.

But before my spa experience even began, my nail technician brought out a brand new sterile package of nail utensils that she opened up in front of me. And I was informed that each massage chair has a Backflow Prevention System that keeps the basin clean and fresh. Love it!

My intoxicating spa treatment included a marine cooling mask, a sea salt scrub and a warm lotion massage. As my hands and feet were delightfully softening in the paraffin wax, I relaxed into the hands of my technician who gave me a neck and shoulder massage – all included in the package.  By the time my nails were being painted, I felt my body was completely relaxed and refreshed from head to toe.

I was so happy with my nail service that I popped into one of the well-designed treatment rooms for a quick arm wax. Fab! Other treatments include a full waxing service menu, eyelash and brow tinting, lash extensions, teeth whitening and a wonderful kids’ mai/pedi menu, for children 10 and under.

The Nail Garden is the perfect location for hosting a Garden Spa Party with friends or a Princess Party for the kidos. Or meet up with the girls for the Nail Garden’s weekly Happy Hour. That’s right!  Just book a manicure-pedicure combo on Monday to Wednesday between 5:00 to 8:00pm get a glass of wine on the house. Love it!

And for our fabulous readers….. Receive 15% off any service at any one of the 4 Nail Garden locations when you mention Groomed-LA.

Warren Tricomi Salon for L’Oreal Professionel new INOA (ammonia free hair color). With a half OFF offer for Groomed L.A. peeps!

May 4, 2011

DSC_0259PS

After years of getting my dish water blond hair highlighted with your standard ammonia based highlights, I was sick of looking like a South Jersey soccer mom.  Ammonia based highlights are the gift that keeps on giving.  I'd leave the salon looking like a million bucks and a month later my golden tresses would look like the unfortunate Sun-in bleach job I rocked in high school.

Well, I can fret no more.  There's a new highlight in town – L'Oreal Profesionel INOA.  INOA, which stands for Innovation No Ammonia, advertises itself as the hair color for the future and I have to agree.  I can't rave enough about the amazing highlights Kaz Amor, principal west coast extraordinaire at Warren Tricomi, gave me using INOA.  You get so used to the toxic smell, the eyes watering, the scalp burning that it was hard to believe INOA was actually going to lighten my hair enough like Kaz assured me it would.  Well, mission accomplished.  Not only did I leave the salon with the gorgeous honey blonde I wanted, but three weeks later my hair is still gorgeous, shiny and soft.

This is one hair color you can feel great about – INOA doesn't harm environment, there's no animals testing and there's no yucky chemicals for you.  The question now is why would anyone go back to their ammonia based highlights? They're so twentieth century.

And speaking of the twentieth century – I did my eyebrows no favors in that millennium.  Apparently my brow butchering was so bad, that brow and lash specialist to the stars, Kristie Streicher, spotted my desperate need for help from across the room as Kaz was transforming my hair.  Kristie is in so much demand in both New York and LA that she has to fly back and forth every six weeks to keep her peeps looking good.  She’s now based mostly in LA so we’re super lucky to have access to her magic threading, tender tweezing and lengthening lashing.  And what's so great about Kristi is that she’s into the natural brow so you don’t leave the salon feeling plucked to death.  She shapes, tints – vegetable-based tint, btw – and tweezes the brows into a natural shape that frames your face. I also learned a little trick for people like me who have holes in their brows – the brow comb-over!
