What does Brooke Burke do that I don’t?

July 25, 2011

I love Brooke Burke.  She works her butt off, has what 4 kids (??!!) and always looks insanely amazing, bronzed, super fit and healthy.  But, besides all the material stuff she's acquired (the killer bod, hot hubby, adorable kids, kickin' career) she also works her butt off to stay connected and in touch with her family.  I know this because I read her blog in my daily Modern Mom (http://www.modernmom.com/) email that I devour first thing every morn.

Ya see, me and Brooke, we actually have stuff in common. We both have blended families. She has two kids from her previous marriage to Garth Fisher and two with her current hubby David Charvet.  Half the week, her Garth girls go to their dads and then return home to reintegrate with her kids with David.  She has written about the trials of this and how totally intense it can be for everyone.  I've got the same deal-e-o only divided by two and without the ex-Baywatch babe for a mate.  My five year old girl, Aria, stays with her dad for half the week and I have a one year old, AJ, with my current hubby, Jay, Aria's step-daddy.  It can be a lot to get your head around. Like all families and parenting in general,  dynamics can swing from a blissed-out-love-fest to hot and exhausting.  Jay and I have always tried to stay on top of this stuff and I had written about the AMAZING Connecting to Your Child with the Brain in Mind workshop we attended a few months back which blew our minds ( if only they would do more!).  When Brook touches on this family dynamic stuff in any way, I light up.

So when I read the other day that Brooke had done a weekend workshop (that she raved about) to deepen connection and communication, I perked up, big time.    For someone so stunning in appearance, she is totally unafraid to show the gritty side of how challenging blended families can be.  As if parenting isn't hard enough, add steps into the mix.  Brooke is also the first the go on about how intense it is to be a working mom and the toll it can take at times on her relationship with her husband and her kids. Her blog posts are always honest and raw and this time, I was so moved by the life-altering-life-lessons she walked away with this past weekend, based on the Harville Hendrix, PhD. inspired "Getting The Love You Want", that I jumped into detective mode to hunt down the best workshop providers. Ever.

This led me to life and relationship coaches David and Janis McCann, who run the Center for Conscious Relationships. They are leading PhD.'s in Imago Relationship Therapy.  I am someone who seeks experts on everything (clearly Groomed LA was born out of my obsessive deep need to know the best of the best and consult with them on, er, everything) as in: do I leave my baby for an overnight? Call the child specialist. How do I divvy up dish duty?  Discuss with my therapist. From what I hear, the McCanns are the leading experts in the field of deepening connection and clearing lines of communication a (life-long goals). The more I learned about them, the more people came out of the woodwork tell me they had personally worked with them, on their relationships, with their co-workers, with their families, by themselves.  In case you haven't noticed, communicating is my thing. If there is a way I can communicate with my family with more conscious-awareness, compassion and to make myself heard with as much clarity as possible and (!) to make sure I am listening to everyone's needs with as open-a-heart as possible, than sign me up, stat.

Go poke around their website and you might get as inspired as me. They even have an upcoming workshop on the weekend of August 5-7th in Valencia.   If you need an intense communication chiropractic adjustment or to just wake up if you've are gotten a little sleepy or stagnant in your life –  these are the peeps to work with.

YOUTHFUL LIVING

RakSa’s 1st Community Health Fair

Saturday, July 30, 201 1 | 11am-4pm

An afternoon of holistic information, sample treatments and refreshments with a number of prominent speakers, panelists and experts in the holistic world!

We will be addressing the concept of aging, diet, and beauty from a perspective that will help you discover your own fountain of youth from the inside out.

Change Your Age™ | 11:15 – 11:45AM

Our bodies are constantly being shaped and reshaped by the moves we make. As we grow up, we learn to walk, eat, sleep, dance, make love, and think in certain ways. As we mature, unfortunately, we often move less, become creatures of our own habits, and stop learning to move in new ways. We find ourselves with aches and pains, rigidities, and limits. The good news is that we can continue learning new ways at any age to look, move, and feel younger. Feldenkrais Practitioner and Acupuncturist,

Lucien Demaris will address these issues and how we can all feel younger through the comfort of a balanced mind and body.

Eat Right for Your Being | 12:15 – 1:15PM

Have you wondered why there is food that not only nourishes your physical hunger but your hunger for life? And why there are others that you just can’t touch? Maybe you’ve questioned why you haven’t found soup that tasted and felt nearly as good as your Grandmother’s recipe? Your body is sending you a message through food and telling you how to take care of yourself and others. Ryland Englehart,

Manager and Owner of Café Gratitude and Sustainable Food Systems Consultant and Healing Arts

Practitioner, Cedar Laughingbrook Landsman join Nutritionist Health Consultant, Jess Hilton to guide

you on what to eat and how to eat what is truly right for you.

Holistic Beauty | 2:15 -3:15PM

Our relationship with beauty is a very important human concern. Appearance and image are foundational parts of self-esteem and self-confidence. However, we have turned our concern into how others see us placed less emphasis on how we see ourselves. True Self-confidence and self-esteem can only come from a deeper place. The most beautiful people at any age are the ones who show their authentic soul and humanity in their faces. Find out how beauty can be fully reflected and expressed from the inside out with our beauty panelists: Ashley Beckman, Owner of Golden Path Alchemy, RakSa’s

Dr. Tamara ZumMallen for chemical free freezers. MEI ZEN. The latest in COSMETIC ACUPUNCTURE.

July 18, 2011

Dr. Tamara ZumMallen is an incredible acupuncturist who works at Healing Hands Wellness Center in Larchmont.  She has worked on healing so many things with me over the years, from chronic hip and sciatica pain to lower back issues and nerve damage.

But recently, Tamara added something very exciting to the roster.  She is one of the few acupuncturists in Los Angeles practicing MEI ZEN,  COSMETIC ACUPUNCTURE. Yup, how about acupuncture needles instead of Botox needles to reduce fine lines, release muscle tension not to mention lift the epidermis and up collagen production? I was intrigued and couldn't wait to start my ten sessions (required for results).  I fell in love with it.

First of all, it is so relaxing – 90 needles in the face (not to mention she also treats whatever else is ailing at the time) helped me drift off into the most blissed out nap of my life.  But the results – WOW.  After every session, I immediately looked different. Glowing. Refreshed. Awake. And NO LINES. I immediately thought, how perfect this is for breast-feeding moms who want a little refresher but can't get back to Botox/Dysport yet. It's also perfect for anyone afraid to try freezers altogether. It's totally natural and my lord, I am obsessed with it now.

Patients are saying:

"Not only did my skin look amazing and my crows feet disappear, but it helped keep my stress levels down and I sleep really well after treatments."

"Tamara works holistically.  The Mei Zen was powerful in relaxing my face, lessening my lines and I cannot believe the difference it made in jawline!  What a nice break from chemicals.  But I was also treated as a whole body, and my other ailments were treated at the same time.  Overall, I got more than I could imagine out of a session, inner and outer beauty and healing!"

Here Dr. ZumMallen explains more about Mei Zen for us!

I have been helping thousands of patients meet their holistic health goals for the past ten years.  What I’ve noticed is that when bodies are in proper yin/yang balance and qi is flowing, patients have a glow about their skin and a brightness in their eyes that is undeniable.  This realization has led me to seek out the very best in cosmetic acupuncture, a technique called MEI ZEN.  Mei Zen, meaning “beautiful person”, is a technique developed by Dr. Martha Lucas.

Dr. Lucas explains that by inserting acupuncture needles into specific points on the face, the body experiences a micro-trauma and sends collagen and elastin to  repair the skin.  Ten sessions are recommended.  And just like all Chinese medicine treatments, some results are dramatic and fast and some results are a little more subtle.

Some results a patient may experience with Mei Zen:

A reduction of fine lines

A “leveling” of deeper lines

The beginnings of jowls may disappear

An improvement in acne and rosacea

Skin gets softer and more vibrant

Cheeks get smoother

Overall skin tone becomes more consistent

Age spots have faded

Wrinkles on the décolleté may soften

Cosmetic Acupuncture is contraindicated in the following cases:

Persons with seizure disorders

Persons with a history of migraines

Persons on blood thinners

Persons with unresolved hypertension

Pregnancy
